Homemade Energy Bars (1)

Anyone besides me make their own? I have been experimenting a little.

Feel free to post recipes or steal my latest:

1 bag mini marshmallows
3/4 cup peanut or almond butter
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips

Cook above over low hear until melted

Add:

4 cups oats
1 cup pumpkin seeds
1 cup dried cranberries
1 cup chopped dates
1 cup dried blueberries
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup unsweetend coconut

Mix well and pat into large flat pan (12X17 works well)

Cool and cut into bars

Edit: This basic recipe is stolen from somewhere (I forgot where) and altered somewhat

Why? When there are 100s of different to choose from?

Why? When there are 100s of different to choose from?

Two reasons …

These taste better than anything I have found commercially.

I know exactly what goes into these.

Awesome! I have been thinking about making my own. I am going to go to the bulk food store this afternoon!

3rd reason: cost.

cheers!

your recipe sounds very delicious, but it looks like a lot of quick sugar energy and gas to me. would eat a lot of this stuff post-race for sure!!

My Bride makes a mean clif bar alternative. Still working on the consistency, but has all the good protein and carbs, tastes fantastic, and at only a fraction of the cost!

I have made these, also, though it has been many years.

IIRC, that recipe came from Bicycling magazine about 20 years ago.

Not bars but cookies:

6 tablespoons tahini
1/2 c honey
teasp cinnamon
1 1/2 cup oatmeal

drop on cookie sheet bake at 350 for ten minutes. Easy to transport on rides…you can also add dried fruit, chocolate chips, nuts etc. Not too sweet and awesome!

Hey Vince, that looks a lot like Hazel’s not-so-secret recipe that was given to Meike from Smith & Co in Penticton.

They make the best home brand energy bars that I’ve ever tried.

.

Bang on Nick. It is an adaptation of the recipe that I got from Hazel.

Here are a few recipes

Just watched the episode the other day, made the protein bars and they are actually pretty good. Unfortunately on the website they don’t list the protein/carbs/etc mix but it was pretty good when he talked about it on the show.

I’ve posted this one before: Logan Bread (named after a nutrition/energy dense bread created for an expedition up the mountain of the same name)
As with anything, tweek the ingredients to your liking. Lots of versions of this on the net. I like this one the best.

What would you substitute for the mini-marshmallows? Gelatin ain’t on my OK to eat list.

I’m trying to cook my own stuff and not rely on pre-made everything. I want to know how stuff is made. I hate anything available in a grocery store.

And, I’ll eat whatever I damn well please. You’ll be suffering so won’t be in any position to do anything about it.

I make homemade lara-bar style bars. I have only made the pecan pie one as of now, thinking the Banana will be next or the ginger snap…

I have a good recipe for a bar, will look for it. more of a breakfast bar style with nut butter and nuts

I make my own Larabars. The best are the Cherry ones. 3 parts dates, 3 parts cherries/cranberries in a food processor. Process until it forms a ball of paste. Remove and put in a bowl. Don’t clean the processor

2 parts almonds and 2 teaspoons cinnamon the processor. Chop until it is mostly small pieces, but a few larger ones.

Mix with the date/cherry paste.

Olive oil the bottom of a cake pan and on the hands. Press the mixture into the cake pan. Fridge for 30-60 minutes cut into bars. Wrap and keep in fridge/freezer.

I’ve also made chocolate banana ones using flattened banana from Trader Joes and cocoa powder in place of the cherries/cranberries.

Other varieties include dates, almonds, cocoa powder and a bit of peppermint or mint extract. Or just dates and pistachios.

Larabar has a great website that tells you what is in each flavor of bar. Just look at it and use those ingredients.

I am almost certain you can buy non-hoof marshmellows.

Yup, I have some, but they are really expensive so I was looking for an alternative. I’ll mess around with some ideas. Thx.
