Hoka Speedgoats lasted 30 miles

I got 30 miles out of them before they completely fell apart. The result was an ankle sprain and dropping from 1st to 3rd in a fair well respected trail race.

I bought them in a local running shop which no longer trades, and have since lost my receipt. The response from Hoka has been pretty poor and they really don’t seem to care.

Anyone else had issues with these shoes, or Hoka customer service? I’m a big Hoka fan and have owned many pairs in the past. I didn’t want to move to Nike (like everyone else), but this might force me…

Not yet. Got mine in December initially as a snow/ slush shoe - might use them for trails as well. I have around 50 miles in them with no problems.

Sorry you had that happen. Very frustrating!

That’s a Speedgoat 2 isn’t it?

If you look at Ginger Runner’s review he really likes it but the upper for him has a puncture after 100 miles. The comments mention that Hoka fixed that for some Speedgoat 2s. It looks like fixed 2s have a continuous overlay? rubberised? part where the front part of the upper meets the mid layer. The original have the first 2 parts of the pattern linked but then partial gaps between that and the 3rd, 4th parts of the pattern. You can see the fixed version on some of the screenshots on RunRepeat. Happy to add links later if it helps but in a bit of a hurry now.

It looks like your tear includes the part where Ginger runner has a puncture. Where the first partial gap is.

If that all fits with what you see on your shoes then the least you can say is Hoka knew about the problem. I don’t know if that helps but if anyone is after Speedgoat 2s then maybe they know how to spot the different versions. The 3s are on sale now and 4s are out so probably not many people buying 2s now.

I am a general fan of Nike but I must ask why this would force you to change specifically to Nike? The only good offering they have is the trail pegasus, several other brands out there have much more and better trail offerings. I couldn’t think of a worse shoe to run on trails with than any version of the vapor/alphafly so I hope that’s not what you’re implying

My Speedgoats fell apart real soon also. Did a 50 miler in them and some other runs, so got more than 30 miles, but the uppers tore like yours did. Too bad, maybe my favorite shoes ever. I stuck mine back together with slices of bike innertube and rubber cement on the inside and out, but they’re not quite right.

Actually, I’ve had problems with most of my Hokas falling apart in the uppers before the soles got anywhere close to being worn out.

These are the Speedgoat 2. I think they made some upper changes for the 3.

Hoka has a great return policy on shoes that are 1y old or less. If that’s an older speedgoat (1,2 early model 3) then I’m not surprised by their less enthusiastic response.

I’ve had multiple customers get brand new speedgoats from Hoka on <1yr old shoes even though they had ~ 400-550 miles on them. Soles being ripped apart or off on trail runs when they slide down rock faces or similar.

Here is Hoka’s warranty policy:
WARRANTY RETURNS
The HOKA ONE ONE® warranty applies to footwear that shows defective materials or workmanship. If a product displays failure not due to standard wear and tear, it can be returned or exchanged for up to one year old from the date of purchase. All items sent to HOKA ONE ONE® which are past one year from date of purchase will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

I bought them in a local running shop which no longer trades, and* have since lost my receipt*. The response from Hoka has been pretty poor and they really don’t seem to care.

Were these an Ebay purchase?

Sounds like a dodgy pair, I’ve done 680km in my Speedgoat 2s, from regular training to Ultras and 3 day adventure holidays and they’re only just starting to crumble
.

Hoka customer service sucks. It’s not a good company and I’m not supporting them anymore. I try not to buy their shoes.
