Hoka in Wide

Constants come in a wide model.

“Fit wide” is not the same as sized wide. The Constraint simply runs wide. It is not offered in a true 2E or 4E size. This is the plight of people with wide feet. People will say “Oh, they run wide. You will be fine.” Wrong. Shoving a 4E foot in a shoe with a last that is simply a wide D width is like trying to park an 18 Wheeler in a residential one car garage.

Hey, you don’t need to be rude when someone is simply pointing out information and not providing an opinion. I’m sorry that the world doesn’t understand the plight of the wide footed individual but that doesn’t require a lecture on the insensitivity of people with narrow feet. I simply referenced that Hoka lists the Constants as a wide model. I used to wear Bondi’s up until last year, but when the toebox became too tight I switched to Altras. I recently tried the Constants after reading that they are a wide fit and tried a pair and found the toebox to be a better fit and now use them.

Just chatted with Hoka’s online live chat, and asked them about this. Here is their reply:

I personally have not heard of any plans to release the Bondi 4 in a 2E width, but that is definitely the kind of thing they’d try to keep a secret from us. Sadly, we don’t hear about new releases until they’re released to keep us from spoiling the surprise, so I’m afraid I do not have any specific information on availability. However, I do know that we just put up the new models from our most current season and I don’t think they’ll be putting anymore on the website before next season, so I would start looking for that style in January. At the very least, we may have more information then.

Got an email from Hoka today saying Bondi 4 is now available in EE width. Just in case you or others are interested.

Thanks for the tip! I guess their employee that I was in touch with wasn’t in the know. Just ordered some from Runningwarehouse.com!

This is huge for me. Thank you

Thanks for this, but unfortunately, not available for women. Ugh.

Couldn’t you just wear a men’s in the right size?

Thanks for the suggestion. Sadly, no, they do not make the Hoka Bondi 4 in men’s size 5.5. The smallest they offer in wide is size 8.

Hoka have just confirmed that the Bondi 4 will be available in 2E sizing from October. Huge news for me and judging by the amount of people that think they are too narrow on here, should be good for them too!

Hallelujah! I have very wide feet and I have to 1/2 size up the Hokas to account for it. I’m really a 11.5 2E but I can’t get my feet into a 11.5 Hoka, so I go with 12. An 11.5 2E would be a way better option for me.

Did my first run in my 11.5 2E Bondi 4’s last night. Ran 10 miles right out of the box. They felt great! Nice to wear a shoe that actually fits as opposed to sizing up to account for my wide ass feet.

If they make the Clifton in 2E my running life will be complete.

I’ve had the wide (2E) Bondi 4 for a couple of weeks now. Step in the right direction, but still no panacea. They are certainly wider in the toe box, but they still are too cramped in the midfoot area. Specifically, the arches are too built up, both upward and inward (you can feel this easily with your fingers). On my first run I got blisters on both arches. I’ve continued running in them and have now toughened up the blistered area, because I do like enough of the other aspects of the shoe to keep them in the rotation.

Beyond the blister/arch issue, which I consider a design flaw (for MY foot), I think there is another source of the complaint of narrowness that everyone seems to be having. I was reflecting on this on my run in them this morning, as despite the toe box now being sufficiently roomy, I still feel compression of the first and, even more pronounced, the fifth metatarsal (pinky). I think part of the problem results simply from the fundamental design/goal of the shoe: maximal forefoot cushioning. As you sink into the shoe, your downward force on the concavity causes the outer “rims” of the concavity to squeeze inward. This may be a bunk theory, but it seems to be corroborated by my historical experience with shoes. I have a wide forefoot, but I’ve never had a problem with even the narrowest of racing flats. Contrast that with the Hokas where even in a wide shoe I feel cramped after several miles. And similarly, I love the older 4-lug Newtons and hate the new 5-lugs (like Dev), despite the fact that both have a lot of forefoot cushioning. Maybe the lack of cushion at the widest aspects of the 4-lug shoe alleviates the aforementioned concavity problem, allowing your first and fifth metatarsal heads to “spill” over the sides somewhat?

At any rate, I do appreciate many aspects of the shoe and will keep it in the rotation. I wore the bondi 3 out, even though I had complaints, and I wore the Clifton 1 out (didn’t like this one as much as the Bondi; too soft and compressed too quickly), so I’m still bullish on Hoka. But I will continue my search for the perfect shoe.

Does anyone know how the bondi 4 EE compares to the bondi 2?

I always wear new balance 10.5 2E, but the 11 bondi 2 fits great (I stocked up a few of these)
