Hitch Mount Racks - How To Transport Disc Wheel?

I think I’m screwed. Bought a disc wheel cover from Wheelbuilder to turn my 808 into a disc. I have a Saris Thelma hitch mount rack - plastic ratcheting straps that pass through the rim to secure each of the wheels front and back. Only thing I can think of is transport the bike with a regular training wheel or, cut a very small notch in each side of the disc cover to “thread” the strap through and then when racing close the notch with some electrical tape.

I don’t know…kind of thinking of just racing with the 808 at IMCDA and not bother with the disc cover.

Ideas?

Get a long strap and take the strap under the bike mount wheel carrier and over the top of the wheel where the rear brake intersects. Tighten the strap and you’re good to go.

stick a training wheel on your bike and put your covered 808 in the back seat?

Is this a serious question?

Put something else on the back and don’t give it another thought.

Is this a serious question?

Yes, like I said “Only thing I can think of is transport the bike with a regular training wheel”

Just making sure there isn’t some trick or method I haven’t thought of.

i have the 1up usa, can carry disc wheels

I just use a 1 inch cargo strap (Like the ones people use on their roof rcks/trailers) on over the brake caliper of the frame area and run it down under the rail the bike sits in and tie off the strap once ratcheted, often I put the wheel bar that locks the bike upright on, then use the 1 inch strap over that…if you’re talking about the inability to use the wheel strap cuz the solid wheel…

Or get a rack that supports the bike by the wheels but has a clamp on the frame to hold it firm. Also good anti-theft.

You never want to have a disk on a car-racked bike. It catches a lot of air.

i did this yesterday…i got to the race, and put on a latex glove cuz my chain is DIRTY!!! and swapped the wheels in 2 minutes, i don’t understand why this is a life altering decision.

I have the Thule T2 rack and if I put my disc-ed bike on the back, I make sure it’s in the position closest to the car and I use a bungy cord under the mount that attaches to the bike on the axle (non-drive side) and der hanger.

Couple of options:

  1. use a training wheel and throw the disk in car
  2. use one of these (http://www.rei.com/product/724951/pedros-chain-keeper-tool) throw disk in car
  3. remove cover, transport cover in car, put cover back on when arrived at destination

One tip, be careful about leaving the cover in the car on a hot day.

x2.

I was traveling to a race with my disc wheel on. I’m on the freeway and look in my rear view mirror and nearly crap my pants as I see my bike darn near horizontal from the disc catching so much air. Took it off at the next exit. BTW - my Hed 3 (front) catches a fair amount of air too. But it’s tolerable.
