Hip pain after sleeping

This seems to be getting more frequent (aging?) and seems unrelated to training as I haven’t changed training much at all. Over the past 5-6 months (guessing) my hip pain seems to becoming nightly. I used to wake up with hip pain but only very ocassionally but it now seems to be the norm. I’ll wake up from sleep on my side, with an aching hip, roll to the other and wake in the am wiht both hips complaining loudly. i don’t consider taking medicine as I’m fine when I go to bed and after I get up. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I only get hip pain after sleeping and it is enough to wake me up. Once I get up, I’m fine. I’ve tried digging deep into both ass muscles but can’t find a specific source (though all is sore as a norm).

I have problems with this on and off. For a time it was the outer part of the hip, and would keep me up nights. Turned out to be bursitis and a simple shot fixed it that side

now what happens is more related to running/ and lack of stretching and core work. When I skip doing a simple cool down too many evening on later runs, not doing simple stretching and core work {apx 10min} and/or sit more at work than normal within a week I’ll start having these hip pains at night. Once I start the stretching/core work it slowly goes away. What’s even stranger to me, is I’ve noticed that wearing a certain pair of dress shoes and standing a lot will make my hips bother me that night.

pillow between the knees?

pillow between the knees?

This helps me when my hip acts up.

you know I Have been slacking in teh stretching department. thanks so much!

i’ll try this tonight. thanks!

Yes, stretch, stretch, stretch. Turned 42 last year and developed a fierce pain in my knees. Trained with the pain for a year until it got unbearable. Couldnt walk down a flight of stairs near the end. Started stretching and, thank god, the knees started to heal.
I think stretching isnt discussed nearly enough on this forum. Also started with yoga recently and it has definitely helped with eliminating quirky pains!

tight IT bands can contribute, especially when both sides and that CAN turn to bursitis (which can be fixed without a shot).

can you sleep on your back?

Can someone recommend some stretches AND strenghtening exercises to help my hip bursitis.

My ortho wants to give me a cortisone shot but I’d rather try a more holistic approach.

Thanks

Ron W.

thanks so much! Stretched quads, hammies, calves and ass (maybe IT?) last night after run. Slept with pillow (though it kept waking me up) and pain free other than small aches last night. Stretching goes back after Every Run now (regardless how short) and I have to find time for yoga (after the roof is finished).

How old is the mattress? The people who want to sell you a new mattress say to replace after 8 years. Mine got to 10 years and I began to wake up with hip pain. If yours is older than 8 years, You might try sleeping one night on a newer mattress and see if it makes a difference. Treat yourself to a night in a hotel.

I woke up this morning with hip pain. This has occurred on and off for the past few years. Went to three different physios who did not help me, and each had a different diagnosis. One said it was my piriformis, but doing my own research, I think I have hip bursitis.

I was told to try to run with my glutes more to solve this.

Did you solve your hip pain problem, Kathy?

yes. it was textbook bursitis. Didn’t get the injection and i think it was related to cycling position. taking time off cycling has helped and i do IT band stretches regularly. I wish i could get aFIT but that isn’t going to happen easily. I think mine is directly related to cycling position (influenced by scoliosis and short leg). have a new bike now (WHEEE) so we’ll see…

I’ve experienced this with a saggy mattress. I think if it sags too much in the middle, the angle causes a “continual stretch” and IT band/muscles around the hip start to complain.

It could also have been Gluteus Medius Syndrome (GMS). For those of you reading this thread with hip issues, don’t overlook your glutes. The insertion point of your glute to your hip is very near the IT band insertion point. Outer hip pain that radiates a few inches down your IT band is often GMS. Typical overuse/imbalance issue.
