Hip bursitis...anyone ever had it?

I’m beginning to think that my hip pain when I run (or climb stairs) is bursitis (based on my own expert diagnosis…and yes, I’m going to a real doctor soon if rest doesn’t clear it up soon). Anyway, curious as to how long to stay off the bike or running…anyone else every diagnosed with this? Thanks…

Yep.
Was coupled with ITBS.
Good times.

Was told to stay off for 2 weeks, anti-inflammatories, ease into it after.
The ITBS involved therapy as well.

Just a personal thing, but I’d be wary of steroid injections to control the bursae.

2 weeks is what I decided to go with initially, but after running on it last Saturday, its not really much better, so I’m getting a bit concerned that its going to take longer than that.

Thanks…

Yeah, I was just saying that’s what they told me.
In reality, it took quite a long time. You have to let the inflammation go down significantly, then you need to figure out what you were doing wrong to get to that point.
I’d say it took at least a month before I could comfortably put in any miles.

Don’t follow my advice so much though, b/c like I said I had/have ITBS issues as well.

I had it flare up a few times in my running days. It was always short-lived and fairly acute. It was brought on by long hill repeat workouts and was due to the downhill running. I quickly learned to turn around and run backwards down the hills on those days and the problem was solved.

If you’ve been purposely seeking out hilly running routes, one thing I suggest is to remove the hills for a while (or at least adapt by running backwards downhill, or purposely running on your toes while doing downhill).

If you can get in to a PT and get some stretching, massage, and ultrasound it will help a lot.

I had it and didn’t know what it was, it was just soreness getting worse and worse, then one weekend I couldn’t move my left thigh or bear significant weight on it. A trip to the ER and an x-ray resulted in the diagnosis, and a steroid shot w/ other anti-inflammatories gave me enough relief to talk home. Corrective insoles in my running shoes all but eliminated the problem. I found the pain unsual because it felt like muscle soreness, but since it was at the joint, it was much deeper in the hip that I’d ever felt before.

I had to refrain from running for almost 4 months before all pain was gone. I was doing all kinds of stretching and then switched to Chi Running. Only minor flare ups for over 1 year (mostly after hard workouts) but have discovered that the foam roller is the best cure for my flare ups.
