High Triglycerides?

I just got blood test results back and everything was great/normal, except for “borderline high” triglycerides at 158. I was beginning tapering for Ironman Texas, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Does anybody have any thoughts on why a vegan Ironman would have high triglycerides and normal everything else? Too much carb-munching? Was it temporary just because I had just eaten?

Triglycerides are completely a waste of time to test after a meal.

Is that why they say don’t eat before the test - and I vaguely remembering that I had eaten something might be the cause?

Yeah. Everyone has a spike of triglycerides after a meal. Cholesterol levels won’t be off that much (especially since you don’t eat any cholesterol being a vegan), but triglycerides need to be fasted to be accurate.

Thanks! Makes total sense now. I was worried that I had fat cancer and all the broccoli rubs had been a waste of time.

If you do find out you really have high triglycerides try slow niacin as that helps bring down the numbers… LA Rob

Carbs will actually cause high triglycerides. Test again later and definitely fasting.

carbs cause an insulin spike to increase fat storage and excess carbs will cause lipogenesis, aka they turn to fat. Slow burn niacin is useless it is not the same as the flushing kind

…I believe I have ridiculously low triglycerides at 40mg/dL…

My doc always has me fast for 24 hours before getting your triglycerides tested.

Carbs/sugar are the main issue. I had several glasses of red wine the night before a test a few years ago and it sent me off the chart.

My triglycerides used to be very high. Rather than prescribing meds to control it, my doc suggested I first try losing some weight. Losing twenty pounds over the past year seems to have fixed it (plus it’s helped my run a lot).

Can you help me with gaining weight, I have problem with that…
