High Sprint power, low FTP

A rider claims to produce 1600 watts for 5 seconds at 130lbs. Although, he reports his FTP is 200. Is this possible? He’s a triathlete who claims not to train his sprint power. While in bike races, he claims to be able to move from off the back of the pack to leading the pack in the final 200 meters.

Allthough 1600 is rediculous…

my max 5 is 1005, and my ftp is 270ish. Sooo i dunno if that helps… but 8 times ftp seems a little crazy.

A friend of mine used to be preety good in a sprint won a few races in Italy, France and Belguim he could produce similer figures for5sec but he did weigh nearer 80kg. He would have loved that power with that sort off weight maybe without the panthers and fashion shows he could have droped that bit more weight and been a legend like your friend. Mario somebody cant remember hes surname liked tyo wear red and pink alot.

1600W at 130lbs is BS. He would be the best sprinter in the world with those numbers. period.

He’d be off the power profile charts at that wattage, so he’s likely exaggerating or his PM is off. As far as having a high sprint power and low FTP, yes it is possible.

That gives Power to weight of 26.66 which is just above the top of world class, so highly unlikely. I know plenty that have high 5 to 30sec power and relatively low ftp. These are generally IM guys that come from sprint back grounds (400m track runners, or power/sprint sports). I coach a few that can output 1300-1400w for 5sec and mid 200 ftp…

This person may THINK this due to power meter malfunction…you can get some strangeness in the downloaded files, especially below the 5 second mark. I’ve seen this most commonly with the PT.

That is the most plausible explanation. Time to review the files and look for the errant information.

I remember reading that Tyler Hamilton and another rider (I don’t remember who) used to have bets on whether or not one of them would be able to hit 1,000 watts in the sprint.

I think your homeboy is full of shit, FTP aside.

1,000 watts isn’t all that hard to do for a reasonably fit cyclist.
I’ve done that several times on a calibrated computrainer, as well as on my PT wheel; granted I could only hold that for a coupla seconds in either case.

However, I agree that the rider in question either is BSing, or has a miscalibrated PM. Or both.
My vote is for or both.

ditto; your friend is full of shit…

My vote is for or both.

You’d think that if he was going to BS, he’d BS a higher FTP, no? Why do we need to ascribe malice to everything?
