I was feeling tired and weak so I thought I had low iron. I went to the doc and the results are in… HIGH IRON! … 167ug/dL. Saturation is 53%.
The doc and all the reading I did on the subject states that people with high iron go to the doc thinking they have low iron because the symptoms are the same.
I am waiting for my Hemochromatosis results.
SOOO… does anyone here have high iron? If so what are you doing about it?
Here is what I would do,
Wait for your hemochromatosis results,
Then, this part is nuts.
Ask your doctor depending on your results or his/her recommendations.
It runs in my family, but I don’t have it (although I’ve wondered because I have had many of the symptoms).
It’s usually diagnosed in the 30s or 40s (any later and you probably die before the diagnosis).
Here’s how it’s treated: Donate blood monthly…cured.
As a triathlete this may create a struggle for you to train through the week after giving blood each month, but you’ve got no choice.
Perhaps you will find that your iron levels rise at such a rate that you don’t actually need to give blood that regularly, just watch it until it’s high then have blood drawn.
x2 on the donating blood monthly; I have a friend with high iron levels and she has 1L of blood taken every couple months and that keeps her Fe levels where they should be.
what were your symptoms? because Ive been toying with the idea that Im low on iron b/c Im constantly low on energy and Im a young guy that eats really well and exercises everyday.
trainin and racin have been goin fine however i got my bloods checked twice in feb whilst gettin lactic testin and both times both hemoglobin 17.8 and then 18.1 and hct 54.1% and 52.2%. advised t give blood when i have no races and plan on gettin bloods checked again in next few weeks to see if still high as tests above where on a tues/fri of same week.
would be interested in how you get on with doc
cheers
