High-hands position with Zipp Vuka Stealth?

hey yall,

i’ve got a BMC TM02 (2017) with zipp vuka stealth base bars/cups and i’m trying to achieve a high-hands position. given that it is an old model base bar, i’m having a hard time figuring out what my options for a high-hands position are. does anyone run one of these and has achieved such a position?

All the Vuka’s use standard 22.2 extensions. So anything you want to run should work. The cups depend on which particular model and vintage of Vuka you have (assuming this is the full bar/extension variant and not the bull bar and bolt on round handlebar extensions) . The earlier models had cup hardware that rotated based on selected pad width, which probably doesn’t work that well for cups designed to mount to a flat mount. The last version of the Vuka had flat cup mounts and additional tilt built into the pedestals.

Some of the aftermarket super-extensions also offer Vuka conversion mount options.

I have a Vuka Aero base bar, which is similar. I believe the difference is that the Vuka Stealth has a built-in stem. I’m on a circa 2014 TM01. I angled my extensions and cups by combining Zipp risers with a Drag2Zero angled riser and pole clamp. I use Culprit cups and 400mm Profile 50A extensions. This setup is solid and comfortable and I’m really happy with it. I will send a picture and the product links tonight. I think what I have is exactly what you’re seeking.

Edit. Corrected to say I have the Vuka “Aero” base bar.

Just be careful with getting your hands too high. I tested at A2 with both 70mm and 110mm rise Vuka extensions (as well as a bit of tilt) and the higher hand position on the 110 was measurably slower for me.

Below are the photos and links I described earlier today.

I used the Zipp riser first, because that sits nicely in the base bar. There is no tilt on that. I have actually paired 25mm and 10mm risers, because that’s the height I want. I can stack the risers by doing a minor amount of filing on the 10mm (top) riser and using bolts that are 10mm longer than the bolt for the 25mm risers.

After that, I added Drag2Zero’s 15 degree angled shim and pole clamp. Use the D2Z angled shims technical guide to verify your risers’ bolt spacing will work with them.

Finally, there’s the Profile Design 50A extensions and Culprit pads.

I have the same base bar and love what you did with the drag2zero angle shims and pole clamps. Would you still recommend this setup?

I have the stock C1 armrests on a 50mm riser, and want more pole angle than I can get with that setup. I have a 10mm wedge under the armrests, which helps, but want to get the extensions up higher. I have the vuka evo 110 extensions.

Unrelated question - what are you using on the base bar ends by the brakes? I have etap blips and haven’t found a better option that wrapping under bar tape. I’m quite hopeful that you have blips under those grips

Ah I see… just the blip grips. Didn’t realize they would fit the base bar!

Aloha!

I would still recommend this setup. It’s going strong more than a year later.

I went from Zipp’s 70mm to 110mm extensions to the Profile extensions, which are also longer, to get the height, length and wrist comfort I wanted. I always used aluminum extensions because I could find and trial them for $50 or less.

The blip grips go onto the base bar with a little massaging. Isopropyl alcohol seems to be the best lubricant. The blip grips slide on easily and the alcohol evaporates after about 24 hours.

I’ve since installed a 12-speed 1x chainring, Rival AXS RD and Rival 12-speed cassette. I have 3D printed holders for SRAM’s wireless blips on the extensions that work exceptionally well. You can get them off Thingiverse. I haven’t figured out base bar shifting yet.

Awesome, thank you.

I haven’t made the jump to 12 speed yet, and not sure if I ever will since I have 3 different bikes with 11sp etap and don’t want to upgrade them all. Maybe in a few more years when the next generation tech comes out.

Hello
I have the zipp vuka and i am looking for ways to raise my position. Actually i was looking for the high stack kit(2x50mm risers, 1 10 mm bridge) but it is out of stock from everywhere i looked. Is there any alternative ways to rise without the originals risers?
Thanks in advance

There are two possibilities. You can make your own risers in a custom length you want to use for your setup. I did that for two different bikes in the past several years. My needs are different from yours. I have back issues and need taller risers than most bars have available stock, except the Tririg Alpha One with the optional high post. The Alpha One is a versatile product but I could not justify the price since I don’t compete.

My DIY custom risers took a long time to get all the parts working together well. Had I known what it entailed, I would have started the project in the beginning of the year. Basically, what I did was cut a new aero carbon seatpost I purchased locally into two halves and trimmed the excess I didn’t need. I made the risers deliberately shorter than I required, so that I can install spacers if I wanted to change the height later.

The endless measurement taking, cutting, experimenting with different bridges, then ensuring the extensions worked with the FastTT angle adapters together with the custom risers took over a month. I don’t recommend this route unless you’ve done it before or know someone who has. Multiple ways it can go wrong, which is why it took me so long.

The second option is to order from a company that makes custom risers. Custom ordered risers are usually 3D printed. Some companies might already have risers for the exact make and model of handlebars on your bike, or have ‘universal’ risers that may fit on a wider variety of bars. I’ve seen them offering their products on eBay but I cannot vouch for their quality or safety.

That said, I would go with the second option if you don’t want to purchase a new cockpit altogether. There are many companies offering custom parts now. Someone is bound to have what you require.

Thank you for letting me know. Is there anyone that knows which company might have for the zipp vuka universal risers?

Sent a PM to this poster, but does anyone else know how to properly get those aftermarket D2Z pieces to attach on top of the Zipp spacers? I have this Zipp bar as well, and the attachment bolts for the risers go in from underneath the base bar, and normally thread into a tilt bolt in the top Zipp riser. I’m trying to figure out a way to get rid of that top Zipp riser, that also has the pole clamps built into it, and attach a aftermarket plate on top of the rest of the Zipp risers…not sure how its possible with the bolts entering from underneath…

The company I’m familiar with is Brightliant Designs Products on eBay but there are others on Etsy as well. Contact and ask them about your specific bar and model. Keep in mind that if you’re going to be using a custom height you will need appropriate length bolts and sometimes these aren’t easy to come by. They need to be the right length for safety reasons or avoiding any excess from protruding. Best of luck with this project!

My universal tilt should fit on top of the spacers. However I’m still developing the 22.2 attachment. Testing on the near future
