After reading more bad press on high fructose corn syrup and who hasn’t and who doesn’t agree - what are the alternatives? I’m thinking about those pancakes on a Sunday morning just before a long ride.
Flax seed waffles with natural peanut butter.
Just buy the organic version of the foods you like that have HFCS, they won’t have it in them.
Just eat fresh fruit.
What’s wrong with sugar? Maple suryp, honey, molasas, whole fruit spreads. It’s amazing what people will put into their bodies when there are so many natural sources of sweetness.
I have not had HFCS in at least two years, it’s not hard to avoid.

Care to share some of your alternatives with the crew? I have been having a hard time, harder than I imagined, finding food without HFCS in it. I would interested to hear about some more mainstream foods and their non-HFCS alternatives. Thanks.
I agree with SBR44 that you will find less or no HFCS in the organic section but beware. My BF and I were eating hummus recently and he found it on the ingredient lable. Hummus! There was an interesting interview on NPR last weekend (Fresh Air) about the source of foods and they spoke quite a bit about HFCS and how it’s cheap, tasty and in everything.
i’ve become a fan of agave nectar. it’s a cactus plant extract, clear and about the same consistency as maple syrup, with a simple sweet flavor, but b/c its unprocessed, much better for you than sugar and HFCS, with a lower glycemic index. you can get it at health food stores. i use it mostly in coffee, but i bet it would be good on the pancakes.
my aunt recently developed an allergy to HFCS so she has no choice about avoiding it. but you don’t really need those english muffins, jars of spaghetti sauce, oreos, etc.
Where do you live? If you have a Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods or Wild Oats type store in your town, they will carry a number of products without HFCS.
I am a big fan of molasses because it contains a lot of iron.

there are any number of ways to avoid HFCS in general; but for pancakes, it’s all about real maple syrup. mmmm… maple syrup…
I got this recipe from a friend in bozeman 20 yrs ago. His mom used to make these for the ski team before races. his whole family used to win their respective divisions in XC ski races. I’ve eaten before many long days.
“Frieda cakes” pancake mix:
the mix:
5 cup white flour,1 cup cornmeal,1cup whole wheat,1 cup quick oatmeal
1/2 cup sugar
16 teaspoons baking powder
to make pancakes: 1 cup of mix + 1 cup milk + 1 tablespoon melted butter + 1 egg
nuke some trader joes frozen mixed berries for the top or get some real maple syrup.
for non HFCS soda try Izzie (sp?) soda. My daughter loves it. it’s just fruit juice and soda.
I second the agave nectar. It is near the honey at the store.
