Help with Shimano pedal clips

I’’m a beginner so bare with me. I have pedals that say “Shimano 105” on them and nothing else that I can see. I need new clips for my shoes. Want do I buy? I bought some SPD-SL and they are not correct. Before I buy more, I thought I’d ask the knowledgeable people.

Why do you think that spd-sl cleats are incorrect?

How old are the pedals?

Do you have mountain bike shoes?

Ideally, post a pic of the pedals. Shimano makes “105” pedals that take the SPD-SL (3-hole) cleats, but also ones that take the mountain bike cleats (2-hole).

Take the spd-sl cleats:

Really old 105 pedals that are not clipless:

I have road shoes, Bont Riots.

My old, worn out cleats were 3 hole, but I don’t have them any more to compare to the new ones.

The yellow clips in the photo are the ones I purchased (or I think they are because they’re yellow😂). Being a newbie, it may be that these are actually okay. I put them up to the pedals and while the length seemed correct, the width of the toe of the clip was significantly narrower. Maybe they’re supposed to be this way?

I didn’t put them on my shoes and try to clip in because of the narrowness of them. I (mistakingly?) just thought they must be the wrong ones.

The pedals are also from a r7000 component kit I purchased. They have the “Shimano 105” on the side and nothing on the top, as seen in the photo.

They are a little newer than the last photo 😂😂

depending on whether you get the red, blue, or yellow spd-sl cleats, the front part of the cleat will change in size, as that governs the amount of float that is built into the cleat.

Just an aside to help with terminology.

You need cleats for your clipless pedals.

Titanflexr posted a pic of pedals with clips, aka toe clips.

Ah! Color coding. Good idea. What do the different colors mean?

Okay, now you’re confusing me. Are they “cleats” or “toe-clips”.

Cleats were what I wore in football (American and non-American).

Cleats…

Yellow is 6 degrees of float.

Blue is 2 degrees of float.

Red is no float.

Terminology:

Cleats: The things you bolt to the bottom of your cycling shoes that attach to the pedals. It is less common (but not unheard of) to call the cycling shoes themselves “cleats” (similar to the way football shoes are called cleats).

Toe clips: Plastic or metal “cages” that are attached to the pedal and (along with straps) secure the shoe to the pedal. These are the precursors to “clipless” pedals. This also leads to the confusing concept that you “clip in” to “clipless” pedals.

Thank you sir. Now wonder the yellow ones looked so narrow.
