Help - what changed in Kayano 14s? Ankle problem

Gang,

Anyone know what/if changed with the Asics Kayano 14s? I have had a PTT (medial ankle) issue for a number of years that seems to have done fairly well in Kayanos over the years. Other than the 12s (fit), all of the models had worked for me. However, every time I run in the 14s the ankle seems to flair up.

Any thoughts/advice?

Many thanks,
david

Bump - any help out there?
Thanks,

I have the same issue with my achilles. I had no problem with my achilles until I started wearing the 14s. I went back t the 13s and my problem went away. Unfortunately I can’t find the 13s anymore…

I don’t know about the Kayano, but I ran in the Cumulus for 5-6 years w/ no problems. Then the model changed last year and I developed achilles tendonitis, which has lasted for months. Switched to a Nike shoe (Moto) and it’s finally getting better. But I have a new mystery pain below my ankle and in front of my heel (see separate post "Name my foot pain . . . ")

Sounds like you and I have the same problem. Do you know if they changed anything that could be causing this? I love the Kayanos, but might have to find a new shoe.

i have run in the 21 series for a long time, in the 2130s now and having a lot of inner shin pain, slowly building back up but i can feel it if i push a run.
not sure if it was me or the shoes, will let you know again in a week or two. it does seem like something changed though, i NEVER had issues like this with these shoes till this time around

That’s interesting - I have felt a bit of a tweak in my achilles too. They must have chaged something. Unfortunately, I was stocked up with 3 pairs of the 14s. Sounds like asics must have some problem with this model. Anyone tried the 15s?

Thanks,
david

The 11’s are a classic shoe at Road Runner Sports if that helps.

I have just been coming back from shin splints and now have a slight tweak in my right Achilles? Does not hurt when running but I do know it is there. Actually can notice it more biking then running. Figured it was a freak thing but now I am wondering since I just bought two new pairs of Kayanos if this is the issue? Anyone have some thoughts?

Along the same topic what would be a similar shoe to the Kayano in another brand?

Thanks

The 11s are on sale now too + free shipping. They are a bit heavier but I never had any issues with them.

david

Have any of you tried the 15s? My retailer will take a trade from the 14s, but I don’t want the same problem over again.
Thanks,
david

I haven’t tried the 15s yet, but would be interested in hearing other’s experience with them. I’m too broke to pay $140 for shoes that won’t be any better.

I hear ya! Anyone have experience with the 15s?
Thanks,

Interesting… I’ve had this same question. I’ve run in Kayanos since the 11s and haven’t had any problems until the 14s. I haven’t had any foot/ankle problems until this last shoe. Both PTT/inner ankle areas, right plantar fascia and right heal at achilles insertion. I’ll let you know about the 15s. I just bought a pair and so far have only run once in them. I did like the feel compared to the 14 but, it could have been the difference between a heavily worn shoe and a new one. The hot spots on my foot seemed happier though : )

this is not lookin good.

Does anybody know what they changed from the 13 to the 14? I tried to contact Asics to no avail. Anybody know anybody there that could shed some light?

It might help so we could tell if they changed the “problem” on the 15 or kept it the same.

Was hoping one of the shoe gurus would jump in and give their opinion. My Achilles issue seems to be subsiding without a shoe change. I find it interesting that a number of folks have cited the same type of issues with this shoe?

Just a WILD, and I mean wild guess here and I am not going to try to sell our shoes on this forum. I am suspecting *some *of you guys might be midfoot strikers or light heel strikers. The last few years most manufacturers have added volume to the mid soles. Most of this increased volume is in the heel. If you are a midfoot striker, this extra volume will “get in the way” for lack of a better way to put it. I had this problem with the 2100 series when they went from 2110 to 2120. Now, looking at my handle, you can see I have found a shoe that works for me. Full disclosure, I was using Newtons *before *I worked for them. Good Luck!

Steve - I added a new thread in hopes of attracking one of the gurus…too many of us for that to be a coincedence.
Thanks,

It used to be I could tell you exactly what they did from one to the next. That is while I worked at Road Runner Sports and worked with every shoe company. Now that I work at adidas I can only tell you that it’s really hard to evolve and stay absolutely consistent. I feel for Asics because of where they are in the market and how much people rely on them right now.
So there was an earlier post that said Road Runner Sports had the Kayano 11. Those shoes are still being made for RRS, they are not hold over’s from years past. If you have to have the Kayano it’s not a bad way to go.
All of this hopefully means opportunity for adidas. It’s easier to steal market share than it is to find new runners so here’s my chance. The adiSTar Control 5 if you can find it is a great shoe. You can read all over the net how much runners enjoyed it. Its replacement which just landed in stores a month ago is the adiStar Salvation. Early reports from runners on the Forums is that it’s even better than the Control 5 and the Running Network just gave it a top award. I think even more important is for those of you with heel problems. The Formotion unit (Mechanical Decoupling) in the heel and the heel itself is the exact same between the Control 5 and the Salvation. It’s so good we won’t change it for Spring 10 either.

David - I read your Blog on a regular basis. It’s some of the best writing on the net.
