I have been fighting a torn groin or “sports hernia” for a year now. Last December, when I moved indoors for the winter workouts, I added more core work and a few additions to the winter gym work. Most notably, Lunges with moderate to light weight, but done after riding on a computrainer for an hour or so. I have always been tight and I thought I was strething out my groin, hip flexers while strengthening them and core. After two months of this I was broken. I haven’t been able to run since last February, swimming is out and any movement that is lateral or needs more stability. Been to the orthopedist and MRI showed the pubis joint all inflamed, pubis itself was swollen internally and the muscles on both sides on the lower part of the pubis slightly pulled away from the bone–classic sports hernia. Therapist has me doing light stretches and inner core work, massage and foam roller. I kept cycling at lower intensity and slowly kept healing over the summer. August had a cortizone shot into the pubis joint; helped some. By September figured out cycling was not hurting it but maybe not allowing it to heal. So cut down to two easy rides a week. Over christmas, flu bug led me to have three weeks off of everything but foam rolling (foam rolling seems to really help this and all sorts of tight spots in my legs. I take about 20 minutes to do everything below my navel.).
Well, it is/was getting somewhat better. But, daily activities such as moving some boxes, putting things on shelves over my head, dragging garbage cans out to the curb set it to throbbing. Today I had accupuncture and am at wits end to try allmost anything. Help Me! Anyone ever have a sports hernia and what helped? I want to some day run again or be able to at least walk over uneven terrain painfree.

Sounds more like Osteits Pubis than it does sports hernia.
Go see Dr. William Myers at Vincera Core Physicians. He has a ton of experience working with professional athletes as well as the weekend warrior. If nothing else go to their website…there is a lot of good information on core injuries.
That was part of the original diagnosis along with “Pubic symphysitis with bilateral rectus insertion and adductor tears”. The cortisone shot was to reduce inflamation in the joint and help “calm” the area to allow healing.

I was diagnosed with Osteitis Pubis and eventually pubic stress fractures. I can’t even imagine how painful a cortosone shot would be in that area. It looks like you took no time off with the original diagnosis. I was no biking and no riding for 6 months. Working your core just makes it worse. I am certainly not a doctor but I would highly recommend taking 4-6 months off.
