I finally got the ok from my fiance to bey a set of race wheels…so I look to the experts at slowtwitch. I have basically settled on 2 choices for varying reasons Ksyrium SL’s or Zipp 404. The Zipps would be my first choice for looks and aerodynamics, but the clincher version of the wheel is a substantial increase in weight from the tubie and weigh almost as much as my velomax I have now. For the way I ride and my penchant to hit most of the road hazards out there I like the Ksyriums as I hear they are one of the best all around wheels. Indecision clouds my vision, help me settle before she decides she needs something more than I want a new pair of wheels.
If you choose not to read all that, my main question I suppose is will the aerodynamics of the 404 negate the fact that they are heavier than the ksyriums
Are you looking for race wheels for TT’s/Tri’s or are you looking for race wheels for road racing crits or are you looking for a pair of what I consider lightweight training wheels (the ksyriums)?
If your looking for race wheels for tri’s & tt’s the go with the 404’s. If your looking for lightweight bike racing wheels or training wheels go with the ksyriums.
The 404’s will be more faster for TT’s/tri’s than the ksyriums
Well, I have both wheels: Ksyrium SSC SLs for training (clinchers) and 404s for racing (tubulars). The Zipps are LIGHTER than the Ksyriums (tubular) - check the specs. Add tires, the difference is even a little more.
Since you said “bey a set of race wheels…” (you misspelled it, not me) then get the 404’s for sure (although they cost about 80% more).
