Help needed: Moving to Toronto

I’m temporarily relocating to Brampton, ON at the end of April. I’d like a short commute but would still live in a nice area (not Brampton!) with good running options and a nice pool. I was thinking of Etobicoke as an option as it has a 50m pool and close to the airport. Any comments or suggestions?
Training for Ironman Canada so any advice on good long ride routes would also be appreciated.

Thanks

Honestly, your post makes no sense.

Brampton isn’t nice? Why am I offended by that?

If you don’t want to live in Brampton, but want to be close to a pool and ride/run routes, best bet would be Caledon or Milton I suppose.

Milton. Definitely.
Or, if you can handle a little further commute, Guelph.

I lived in Brampton for 8 years and it is a nice place. There are trails throughout the city to run on. It is a short commute to the 50m pool in Etobicoke or the Y in Mississagua (this is where I used to swim). If you live in the northwest part of the city you can quickly be out riding towards Belfountain (one of my favourite rides along the Forks of the Credit), Caledon, or west to Milton. I would much rather live there than commute in from Guelph since the commute time would cut into training time

I can’t help with location since I don’t really know what it’s like living in that part of the city, but the riding in the Caledon/Orangeville area is really great. I can’t think of a better location if you are IM training.

Allan,

Good point. Like most large cities, in Toronto much of what you do every day revolves around commuting to/from work. So a big issue is where you will be working and where you will live.

Toronto has a poor pool infrastructure - so access to a good pool is a bit of a problem. The cycling within the city limits is, to put it mildly, terrible. Lousy roads. Lots of traffic. Many stop lights. However, outside of the city, to the north, the north west and north east, the cycling is actually very good. Running in the city, depending on exactly where you are, can be remarkably good - some of the best running options of any big city in North America. If you live by the Lakeshore, The Don Valley or the Humber river Valley you will have access to trails and paths that can be linked into 20 mile long runs with minimal road running and crossing.

I don’t know that much about Brampton - the cycling to the north west of there up through Caledon is very good**. **I have heard the commute into the city from Brampton is bad.

There is only one option in that area and it is Milton , great roads to the North and West .Kelso conservation area for open water swims and lots of people to train with .

Steve

Thanks for everyone’s feedback.

As a Montrealer it’s my duty to say this…
If you’re moving to Toronto you really do need help.

Are you sure you are able to say anything through all that smog right now?

LOL!

I’m still hoping I can convince my boss to let me stay in BC. I was looking forward to spending the summer here.

I am currently living in Etobicoke - and from what I have encountered in terms of space and traffic for biking / running, I would suggest moving the other way from Brampton. Milton is closer to the ‘country’ for the longer rides and runs and actually has water for those open water swims. (I unfortunately do not know what the availability is for indoor pools - although I am assuming that there will be a number available as it is a growing community.)

Good Luck!
