Help Me! How to remove dura ace bar end shifters?

Is there a trick? Mine are stuck and I’m trying to switch aero bars right now!

Thanks

i think they are reverse thread…

Just did this over the past weekend. Shifters the levers so they are as perpendicular to the aero bars. Turn the levers counter clockwise using the lever for torque, be careful not to snap the levers off ;-). Their are two spring mechanisms inside the levers that expand when they are rotated clockwise and contract when rotated counter clockwise.

Good Luck,

RF

How far are you? (ie. how much help do you need?)

First loosen the corresponding derailleur cable, then unscrew the flat screw holding the shifter together; be careful not to let any of the small shifter rings inside fall out. There is an internal, usually 5 or 6mm allan screw inside the bar (once you have the shifting mechanism off), that is essentially “reverse threaded” since you have to go the opposite way to loosen/tighten. Turn it a few times to loosen it & it should come right out.

Feel free to email/pm me if you have other questions.

Both guys are right. If you use the hidden allen bolts, then they are reversed (clockwise to loosen). If you rotate the whole end piece, then then are normal and you rotate them counter-clockwise to loosen. It’s a lot easier if you just cut the shifter wire and use a new one when you reinstall.

So thanks for the help…they came off when I twisted the “wrong” way.

Except now I decided to cut the bars shorter because I grip up anyway (Profile Carbon Stryke bars) … but since I cut them I realized that the shifters no longer fit into the bars that are cut b/c they are tapered. Alas, I now need new aero bars (pity). So, what should I get–s-bend, r-bend? Ideas? where to get cheap (e-bay, in the classified section?)

Take a hacksaw and cut them off- that what I did to mine.

I find that a 5 pound sledgehammer will remove most items!

Also it simplifies the tool kit.

Steve,

What was your final solution for this? I also want to take 2 inches off the top of my carbon strykes and am afriad that the bar end shifters will not be reinstallable.
