Looking for a scenic and fun race venue with a moderate field size - no super huge or 10 person races. Looking on TriFind I see races in Oregon, Idaho, West Virginia and Colorado that look interesting. What are your favorite race venues in August? Pretty much anywhere in North America is on the table as long as there is a reasonably large airport within an hour or so.
August 17th. Wetsuit legal swim in a fairly clean reservoir, rolling hills on the bike, fairly flat run. And if you want, you can sign up for the “Crazy Back to Back” (Oly on Saturday, Sprint on Sunday.)
ETA: I should mention that it is a timetrial start in reverse age order, women first, then men. It goes really quick, but it isn’t a traditional wave or mass start.
Coeur d’Alene & Polson, of course. Do you like beautiful lakes & hilly bike rides?

OK, this might work. I have done the Harvest Moon 1/2 in Aurora (same venue?) and it was a fun race also. I like the idea of back to back, especially as i work toward my late season 1/2 at the end of Sept. Good start! Thanks!

I saw these and have the Priest Lake race bookmarked right now. CDA Oly is a week to early, I can’t get away that week.
I’ve been entertaining a fantasy of doing IM CDA as my next IM and the CDA Oly was appealing for that reason also.
Take a look at this race:

I think the airport situation may be a deal breaker (depending on your definition of “reasonably large airport”).
While you are on that web page, take a look around the entire Set Up Events site. All their races are well produced and they have races in NC, SC, VA, GA and MD.
The Stumpy Creek race in the North Carolina series is just outside Charlotte, so there is a large airport nearby for sure.
The Apple Tri in Kelowna I believe it is a fav as it usually a couple weeks before Ironman Penticton or this year Challenge as a tune up as it is just down the road…haven’t done too many but will say this one was the best.
Plus Kelowna is one of the best places in North America during the summer.
Rev3 Maine …where else do you get lobster post race? Was an awesome medal and good sized race Aug 25
Chicago Triatlon August 25th
Check out the Maple Grove Triathlon on Aug 24 in a NW suburb of Minneapolis. It is very well run triathlon with a great course (the happens to be 4 blocks from my house.) Also, it has a great prize for the oly winners a Scott Plasma with dura ace components. My guess is it will be hotly contested as most of the local pros compete in this race each year. Either a fun race.
Rev3 Wisconsin Dells! I’m a little biased though
If your open to a September race, I highly recommend the Portland Triathlon September 22nd. Sprint and Olympic distances. It’s a very well run race with a great course and outstanding support and free beer afterwards. Here’s the Link. http://www.portlandtri.com/
Rev3 Maine Aug. 25th
Park City Mossman in Bridgeport, CT. Decent sized field, really well run event. The swim is pretty nice, bike course is 5 pancake flat loops within Seaside Park (fully closed roads). The run is 2 out and back loops along the water. It tends to be a pretty fast field bc it’s the first race in the Northeast Collegiate series. As for airports LaGuardia, JFK, Bradley, and Westchester are all within about an hour.
I think chicago is fantastic. im from detroit area and i go every year and also the chicago marathon. at least look into it. it shold be on every triathlete to do list
never participated, but have heard great things: http://www.eclipsemultisport.com/wilson-wet-wild-homepage
.
Apparently Simon Whitfields favourite race.
Hyvee Triathlon (A 5150 event) in Des Moines, IA on Labor Day weekend. Is that too late? I’ll be there. It’s the 5150 US championships but also has a regular age group race for thsoe (like me) that didn’t do an offical 5150 event to qualify. Wave starts and the 2 seperate non pro races I think had about 650 people in each last year, so pretty large, but not huge. You can check last years results for time s and number of entries in your age group.
Probably not the most scenic, but it draws many of the top US pros. that race olympic distance.
I was visiting Chicago one year during that event on year (when I wasn’t racing a lot of triathlons). It looked absolutely huge, the largest transition area I’ve ever seen. I think it takes over 2 hours to get all the waves through. Probably the flattest bike and run course you’ll ever do. I think there a couple bridges and overpasses that are a stunning 15 feet in elevation with a staggering 5% grade. Although wind coud be like a super long climb.
