Help me decide if bike will fit inside of car

Here’s the problem. I’m buying bike from LBS but I’m trying to decide what type of rack to use. I think I want to have this in my car:

I’m just not sure if the bike will fit. And I don’t have a bike to measure/test. I sold mine years ago and am getting back into the sport.

So could someone help me? Should be a quick measurement.

I ride around a 54 and am looking for dimensions shown (not labeled) on here.

Basically, an approx. seat height, from the ground to the top of the seat, if the front wheel is off and the fork is on the ground.

Also a horiz. measurement from the fork to the back end of the back wheel if the front fork is on the ground.

All measurements can be approx. I have no idea if I’m even close.

The car is a Honda CRV, by the way.

I’d email the mfg (they probably know).

***Be sure to account for your aerobars sticking forward.

Worst case (and seat tube angle), you need roughly 54 inches from where the fork mount is located to the back seat (or front seat if the backseats are down). By turning the bike at the head tube you can reduce that requirement a little. If you remove the back wheel you can save another 13 inches or so, a pain in the ass, but not insurmountable.

The seat is not an issue. Mark its position with a sharpie and then one 5mm allen screw drops it, if that is even necessary.

Don’t know if it will fit or not. A previous poster’s comment about the aero bars is on the money.

I built a similar thing for my van. Two fork mounts from Performance for 9.99 each. A 4 foot 1x3 from home depot for 1.72, cut to 45 inches. Stick on felt from WalMart $5.00. Total cost including tax, under $30. But, I’m a cheap bastage.

Can’t help you, but reminded me of the smart car I saw the other day with a bike rack on the back of it and attached a nice mountain bike that was bigger than the car. Hilarious.

I get that you’re excited about the new bike and want to buy all the accessories for it asap, but the best answer is to just go buy the damn bike and put it in the back of your CRV to find out if it will work or not. Wild speculation on ST isn’t going to help you figure it out. Congrats on getting the new steed! Ride it hard.

Should be no problem…I used to fit my Cervelo Dual in the trunk/backseat of my old crappy Saturn (ie small) sedan. Take off the front wheel and seatpost/seat. Fold down the rear seats, and put the bike in rear wheel first.

Done.

My car broke down in Louisville Monday morning after IMLOU. Had to get towed to a dealer, with my bike on the rack still. Dealer gave me a freaking VW Beetle rental. I stuffed my P2 in the back and drove home to Cincinnati with my forks 1 inch from my temple the whole time. Sucked.

FWIW: My 58cm P2 fits inside my VW Golf (w/ rear seats folded) no problem.

I’m 95% certain it will NOT fit without lowering your seat.

I ride a with a 75cm seat height (Arione). Pretty much all my bikes have roughly the same BB height and I’m barely “wedged” in my 2002 4Runner with a simliar set-up. I use a 1/2" piece of plywood with fork mounts (for a truck bed). At LBS for $10/ea.

I’ve been in the market for a new SUV for a few years and literally have taken my bike set-up to the dealer. Even the new 4Runner’s have a slightly lower rear cargo area.

Quite honestly, the coolest trigeek SUV has to be the Land Rover LR3/4, but it has Consumer Reports lowest rating. Arrrgh.

In addition, this set-up won’t fit (with my 75cm) most full sized SUVs (Tahoe/Escalade/Land Cruiser). It does fit a Suburban.

If you look on the Nissan’s Xterra site, they have the fork mount as an option…but it will usually require a lower seat height.

Good luck.

If it’s a newer CR-V, I think it would only fit in the way you want it to if you remove (not just fold) the rear seats. Because they don’t fold flat, they take up quite a bit of room. That’s how I do it when I want to carry both our bikes upright and inside our CR-V and not have them leaned up against something…

Hate to be a pessimist here but no way will the bike fit like you want it to with that rack in the back of a CRV. The aerobar extensions is what does it in.

All triathletes need one of these as long as we’re looking stupid with our wetsuits, aero helmets and such.

Don’t know about your CRV but there were some cool pics awhile back about someone putting two bikes in a honda fit.

This?

Can’t imagine that setup wouldn’t work in an SUV, although it helps that the back of my car folds flat. Although my original reason for wanting it to fold flat had alot more to do with sleeping.

To the OP, both of those bikes are 54s. Still have a few inches to spare, although taking my buddy’s 58 we had to lower the seatpost. Fit two mountain bikes in the same way, but the handlebars make it a pain.

The Honda Element is where it’s at for bike transportation. I tried to fit my bike upright in every vehicle I looked at and the Element was the only thing that fit the bill. It works so well mostly because of the low floor - the fact that its a urathene floor that you can simply wipe down with a damp towel is a nice bonus, especially now that cyclocross season is here. I am currently running 782mm from BB to top of the saddle and I’ve got tons of clearance; my saddle could be a LOT higher before I run out of room. I have two fork mount carriers for truck beds bolted to a 2x4 cut to span the width of the Element and even my TT bike fit no problem as long as the front seats weren’t all the way back. I can also fit two fully assembled bikes (front wheels still attached), though securing them so they don’t bounce around is the challenge, but I’ve done it before.

EDIT: my two fork mounts and 2x4 setup is identical to the one in the Fit pictured above.

Ive tried similar setups in my 98 pathfinder with less luck. I usually run into seat(bike) height problems. Im only on a 56cm frame. I may be able to do it with the back wheel off but it’s been a while since I tried. After seeing the honda fit, I’ll have to look at it again. I can lay my bike down in the back just fine with the front wheel on so thats what I normally do. Just sucks when im not alone, I dont like stacking bikes on there side but I have laid 2 in the back on there side. I also have to sell my hitch mount bike rack and get one that holds the wheels like a city bus now that neither my tri or mtn bike like to fit on the rack well.

That might have been me and my katmandu. But I really need to take a picture of my tarmac inside the smart car…

You need to get good with photoshop and put the car on the back of the bike …

Size 54 will fit in this
.

Sideways! Why didn’t I think of that? I’ll now confirm that a 58cm Tarmac will fit in this configuration, if you fold & slide the passenger seat forward. Mind you, I’ve got a 2006 smart cdi, which is a little smaller than yours. It’s hard to see in the picture: what’s going on with your handlebars/aerobars?
