One of my bar-end shifters is loose. But for the cable tension and little goo from the electrical tape, it would fall out. I can’t find anything in Zinn that talks about how to tighten this. Anyone got any ideas? (particularly ones that don’t require pulling the cable and/or rewrapping the handlebar tape?)
It tightens with an allen wrench. 5 or 6mm, I can’t remember which. You have to remove the shifter assemble from the mount (this is attached with the screw on the side). You will turn the allen wrench counter-clockwise to tighten it. You have to put all the parts back in the same position when you are done.
If it is a Shimano you have to undo the screw that goes through the lever, this then allows the lever to come off the seating plate between the lever and its housing, the lever will then hang off, look inside the bar end and you will see an allen bolt, this needs to be tightened before reassembling the whole unit.
One point trying to get it back together is a pain as the cable tension causes some problems getting it seated correctly
Good Luck
The means to tighten the Shimanos is an expansion screw inside the shifter body. You have to take off the little shift lever to reach it.
