right now I’m using a copy of an excel spreadsheet (courtesy of Ray Britt, www.runtri.com) that I’ve tweaked a bit and the Polar Precision Software.
I’d love to marry the 2 together and get something that does the following: Easy interface to enter daily workout data (duration, distance, type (S,B,R or other), avg pace) and place for notes/comments w/plenty of space for full swim workouts as well as interval workout descriptions and daily vitals (body weight, hrs of sleep, waking HR, etc.) graphing capability to chart weekly training time/distance. also ability to chart hrs of sleep, body weight over time. nutrition log (perhaps as a plug in) with calculators for daily caloric intake vs. calories burned in training (with surplus, deficit calculation) ability to download Polar, GPS data and chart HR, time, distance, elevation. Also ability to download and chart power data (I don’t use this, but want to in the future) planning function with ability to upload calender to MS outlook and iCal. summary page to show percentages of swim/bike/run over a specified time period as well as YTD totals. Ability to track usage of equipment, most valuable for checking running shoe wear.I would pay up to around $50 bucks for something that did all of this effectively.
DD - Im very happy with my excell spreadsheet workouts. work real fine for me.
Training peaks was good - plenty of places to put extra info like diet/shoes/ HR etc. and pretty comprehensive but time consuiming - takes waaaaayyyy less time just to write comments/what you completed etc on the printed out excell program. or a piece of paper!!!
I tick sessions off as I go, can take the program anywhere I go (dont need a computer to see what session or report what i did)
I apply the principal of KISS trying to just worry about doing each session.
Graphs and stuff are good as is uploading files from polar and SRM etc. so trainingpeaks works well here i suppose but so does my SRM or polar softwear for basic graphing - any more analysis well thats whats the coach for eh!!! Do you really need to sit and anaylize everything - just get out the door for the next session!!!
For recording sets in the pool, what you ate daily, moring HR and just about everything else an exercise book or normal diary with a page to a day works well - you have space to write details, can take it places and is always accessible. Or as I do print off my excell spreadsheet program a week to a page leaving plenty of space to write these things in the box next to the day or session as appropriate. I then file these in a folder and have these going back about 5 years now
I conceed no graphs, but can easy bring up them by date on the computer if I want to look at a specific ride’s or run’s data.
For female athletes: a place to record phases of their menstrual cycle
I had already thought about that. When I first started coaching about 10yrs ago, well it took me two years to figure out how to plan all that. Now I just recommend Seasonale or the depo shot! 3-4 periods per year vs 12-13. It seems to make everyone’s life better.
It lists all the features that I thought were important. These include:
Users can add their own fields to track and graph what they want.
They can share their log with friends or a coach.
Lots and lots of plots. Definitely look at that section of the documentation for examples of all of them (I just added a weekly distance plot and that is not in the documentation yet).
Cross platformable WIN, OS X, Linux, BSD, etc.
Import and export from a speadsheet
Current short comings: Not a lot of integration for importing lots of data from HRMs, GPSs, etc. If someone wants to send me the stuff I’ll integrate it.
