I’d appreciate any info on exact installation steps of a 10spd cassette on my kickr core. As straightforward as can be…like I’m an idiot (yep).
I found some Reddit comments but still need some clarifications. I’m not good with the specifics.
I don’t have the original packaging and whatever extra parts came with the wahoo. I know I need some additional spacers but can I just use the standard black spacers that come with other cassette purchases? In what order do I place them to avoid shifting issues?
You’ll need spacers adding up to 2.8mm. I’d expect the cassette to come with a 1mm spacer (which is right for a 8-9-10sp freehub) but an 11sp freehub (which is what the KickrCore has) need that extra 1.8mm.
The spacers go between the largest sprocket and the mechanism (lockring other end of cassette ftaod).
“It seems like I “might” need 2.8mm? But also maybe 1.8 only?”
You need both spacers (as the article you’ve pasted says). I am assuming that you have the stock Shimano HyperGlide 11 (HG 11) compatible freehub body “compatible with Shimano HG, SRAM PowerGlide (PG), and other cassettes with 7-12 cogs. This is included with KICKRs and CORE.”
But is your cassette mentioned above e.g. a Tiagra 10-speed (road)? CS-4700 (see below)
Prove this to yourself by putting two 1mm spacers there (as a sub for ‘just’ a “1.8 only”) and you’ll find the lockring bottoms out.
"10 speed cassettes’ overall width is actually smaller than that of 8 and 9 speed cassettes . . so . . . requires a 1 mm wide spacer.
"However Shimano “builds in” the spacer on some 10-speed cassettes. For example: Tiagra 10-speed (road) and many MTB 10-speed cassettes have a bit wider spider so there is no need for adding the 1 mm spacer.
"On an 11sp freehub a “10 speed cassette requires an additional 1 mm wide spacer (along with the 1.85 mm wide one) (for catches and caveats, see the [10-speed freehub] section above and the [8-9-10 speed freehub section]”
Ok that helps. I’m pretty sure it’s an ultegra 10spd cassette. I’ll pull it off my Tri bike and check.
I have my current 11spd bike on my wahoo at home but found a friend who was selling their kickr core and want to throw that in my office. I’m just going to use my old bike for that and it’s a 10spd. Problem is it’s been years since I’ve ridden/messed with it so I forget a lot of the details.
I have a 10spd on my kickr core right now, but I also have an 11spd and 12spd bikes. My suggestion would be to just get the zwift hub for the core at this point. It was $50 on sale for me a month ago.
I was so fed up with fiddling with the derailleur and still not having the shifting working well was frustrating. Its a lot harder to tune the shifters on the 10kg kickr wheel rather than a bike stand.
