Helmet recommendation for folks with a big head

ok, Seinfeld jokes nothwithstanding I do have a sizeable cabeza, given that my current helmet died this morning doing what it was supposed to do (better a cracked helmet than a cracked noggin) I am now in the market for a replacement, however the issue is that for guys with sizeable craniums a lot of helmets tend to sit way up, having very little lateral protection: I’d like something that came a bit lower and ended very close to my ears, any recommendations?

Look at the Specialized line, I too have a knot, and its the best fitting helment I could find. I will try to look at the model this afternoon and PM you.

thanks!

Good question Marco. And for aero helmet?

I have the bell sweep and a huge head.

I’ll echo the other folks that’s already responded. I too have a huge noggin.

Road helmets - I’m able to fit into the Sweep-R comfortably.
Aero helmets - I’ve tried the LG Crono and Limar Crono, can’t get into them. I barely fit into the LG Rocket, so I’m still looking for something with a better fit.

Anyone out there with a recommendation for an aero helmet for us with big heads?

I have a huge noggin and have not liked the giro fit in the past but the new aero helmet has fit me really well as for a regular road helmet I have the bell sweep r and love it, but I really want the new specialized s works 2 d helmet but I guess it got recalled for broken straps my lbs said that the helmet actually cools your head better than no helmet at all… If thats not total bs I have to have it!

Another vote for the Bell Sweep R. I have a 22.5" circumference noggin’ and ordered the size large, and it was too big! Normally I have to get XL hats, etc., but in that helmet, I wear a medium, so if your head is big, the size large should accomodate you.

Bell Sweep.

The Giro Eclipse fits similarly unlike the pneumo and atmos, but I like the Sweep better.

I have a big noggin too…the Giro Pneumo and the LG Rocket…both size L obviously…the problem with some helmets is the SHAPE of your(and my) big head…I have had good luck with those two though…

Road: Giro Pneumo or Atmos (L). I also tried a number of Specialized helmets, and they tend to fit nicely too.

Aero: Giro Advantage II (L). Avoid the Rudy Project Syton – a great helmet, but the largest size (L) is way smaller than, say, the Giro Advantage (L). I had the Syton Supercomp for 2 months, and it was one big headache (literally). Doing my first race in the Adantage was, like, beyond any comparison. That lid is extremely comfy.

the only brand that I’ve been able to get to fit is Bell (large). Have a Sweep R, Sweep XC and a Ghallaiso (sp.). I could never get the Giro to fit, even though they are the same company. + I think that the bell micro-loc adjuster is really nice.

Limar makes a grand head helmet or something like that. It’s what I wear and fits my size 8.25 noggin.

Another big headed person here. This is actually easier to figure out since you can measure the circumference of your head and match it up with most manufacturers since they give the range for each size.

Circumference doesn’t tell the fit story though. Giro helmets touch me head on the front and back first. If I tighten it up to get the sides pulled in, it’s uncomfortable front/back. I have a Bell Sweep R that fits perfect, contact all the way around. Specialized also fits like the Bell shape. Best advice, try before you buy.

I have had good fits with the Bell Ghisallo previously, and currently wit hthe Limar 909. I really love the Limar, especially the vents.

However, like mentioned above, the Limar Chrono just doesn’t fit.

my big head also fits great into both the bell sweep as well as the bell ghisallo.
those are the 2 i currently own.

i also tried on some helmets from catlike when i was buying my sweep and they fit really well too.
the deciding factor for me was the cost (lbs gave me a better deal on the sweep).

I previously ordered three aero helmets to try on…
LAS Chrono
LG Rocket Air
Giro Advantage II

At 24" (just under 62cm) I went with the large in all of them. LAS didn’t have the depth (height) such that the visor was too high and didn’t sit on the nose the way it should. The LG and the Giro both fit pretty comfortably though you have to take a bit more care putting on the Giro as the ear flaps can bend. In the end I went with the Giro as the LG looked too much like a giant egg sitting on my shoulders!

The problem is whilst manufacturers may make the circumference right they often fail to recognise that depth generally increases at the same time.
