Helmet Cover to increase aerodynamics?

I was looking into getting a helmet cover for cold days on the west (wet) coast and was reviewing this cover. Nice to keep out the cold and wet when riding but they also mention it being aero.

Just wanted to get everyone’s thoughts on this claim.

Looks can be deceiving. Must be tested.

Remember how not all shoe covers make an aero difference because they increase surface area? I think the same kind of logic could be applied here too. Could it be more aero? I don’t know.

I am wondering if anyone has tested?

I’ll get one to test. We’ve tested the Velotoze shoe covers several times and, while they’re a huge pain to put in, they’re tested fast on every rider.

We’ve tested other helmet covers provided by manufacturers and they’ve always reduced drag albeit at the expense of air flow.

Jim, thank you so much for looking into this. I am thinking of getting one anyways for cold and wet days but if I can put this on for a race, why not IF it is actually more aero. Of course an aero helmet would be better but should be tested.

I use the shoe covers for cold days and TTs. So tight, I assumed they were fast. Curious if anyone has quantified the drag reduction.

That would be cool to test vs aero-helmet. Let’s say if your regular Giro/RP/bell/etc. bike helmet with this is just as or almost as aero as an aero helmet them maybe there’s no need to shell out or have an aero-helmet for race days. I’d be interested to see it being used on those cheaper lids $50 < that doesn’t have too much flair. Pls. test if anyone can.

Jim- I was just curious if you had tested the warp covers on the specialized sub-6 shoes vs. just the sub-6 shoes by themselves. Just curious if they made an actual difference.

Haven’t tested yet.

In regards to Velotoze shoe covers, we’ve tested them three times so far, and each time it was a pretty good savings. Once we tested against Bioracer shoe covers and the Velotoze actually beat them pretty handily. That was just one test; however, and it could have been a fit issue with that rider as the Velotoze were clearly tighter on the athlete than the Bioracer, so don’t read too much into that. I’ll release some numbers soon as these are independent tests we’re conducting. Either way, for the price, they’re a great deal.

The helmet cover will definitely test faster, but I doubt it will approach aero helmet numbers. Especially considering some of the newer full aero helmets coming out this year.
