HED WHEELS - need your expertise

Hello, I’m looking into buying a set of a HED wheels (full disc back, standard front, both clinchers).

I am currently looking at the Jet 9 front, Jet Disc Plus back. A few questions where I could use some help?

— What does “Flamme Rouge” designation mean?
— What is the difference between “Flamme Rouge” and “Plus”?
— How would this combination compare to using a Jet 6 front?
— Not as important, but do these two wheels have a similar look and coloration?

Thanks to anyone who can help out here!
Ben

To clarify further, here are the two I’m looking at:

FRONT - http://www.trivillage.com/hed-jet-9-flamme-rouge-clincher-front-bicycle-wheel-stallion-build-hedwhe7040-12.html

According to the info here, I will need to go with the “Stallion Build” as I weight ~205 lbs.

Thanks!

Plus means 25mm tires. I would wait on buying them because they are going to be releasing new Jets that have an anodized black machined brake track soon. The pictures of them look awesome

Plus means a 25mm wide rim. Optimum tires are the 23mm Conti 4000s, 22mm Conti Attack, or the 24mm Specialized Turbo Cotton.

Flamme Rouge is an old designation that had a slightly lighter rear hub and then both the front and rear hubs were silver (front with a carbon shell). The FR wheelset was lighter based on the hub weight.

You want the Plus wheels - they are more aero than the older wheels. The new black ones looks to be the bees knees though - that grooved brake track should be awesome.

Plus means 25mm tires.

The HED Jet Plus wheels were wind tunnel tested with 22mm tires.
25mm tires are fine on them, but up front, for time trialing, you can go narrower.

I have a 23mm GP4000s on my rear (Jet+ disc) and it is ENORMOUS. IMO, no need to go bigger on the Jet+ rim… might try an Sworks Turbo for kicks one day

OP: I’d be hesitant to go with the Jet 9 up front unless you know that you’ll be comfortable using it in the wind. Jet+ 6 is plenty fast. Stick with the disc out back, actually helps handling in the wind IMO (unless it’s a hurricane).

couple points.

dude is 205lbs. Jet 9 will be fine.

Sworks Turbo Cotton 24mm is actually narrower than the Conti GP4000s 23mm.

What is the difference between the Plus and Flamme Rouge wheels?

Would the combo I mentioned in my second post be a good pair?

These questions have already been answered in the previous posts

Awesome, sorry for overlooking that. Thanks to everyone for the replies!

Any idea when those new ones are set to be released?

FR is an old term, mostly window dressing on an old style wheel. Don’t buy a FR wheel, that means it’s old.

HED has/had three rim widths… 21mm, 23mm (formerly the “C2” width), and now 25mm (the “+” designation). What is the difference between the Plus and Flamme Rouge wheels?

If you an afford it, then yes, by all means get a Jet+ disc. Wide rim track, use wide tires (which roll faster), have the flexibility of clincher to change tires at will, and if you wait a sexy black brake track.

For the front, Jet+ makes sense as it allows you to use wider tires, or mate very well aerodynamically with narrower tires, especially if you will do longer races in windy conditions. If you’re just doing balls out TTs for short distances, you might be better served with a 23mm wide “C2” rim but we’re probably splitting hairs.

IOW, depending on your use, I could recommend Jet+ 25mm width for both front and rear

neither one of these are the current “+” rim width and shape.

Just to add the fairing shape has changed as well.

23mm
23mm with SCT
25mm with SCT (Plus)

Based on Hed’s own data, there’s not a big of difference between the last 2 option at typical yaw angles.

yeah, where is that data?

YES! Ordered

There are current-selling 2014-2015 wheels with the FR designation.

I thought the same (still making them). FR has been around for a few years. I would guess they go back to at least the time that Hed introduced the 23mm C2 rims. 2009ish?

This is why you need to wait:
