Hed Wheel Repair

I have an older HED deep V wheel with a broken hub, as I unfortunately discovered the night before LoneStar. I just took it into my LBS to have it repaired and was told that they don’t deal with Hed wheel repair because Hed is “difficult for them to deal with”. They suggested the I contact Hed myself. Does anyone have experience with this? Should I try some other bike shops or contact Hed? Any words of wisdom?

Thanks.

The best, quickest and cheapest way to do this is to call HED direct. I trashed my HED 3 last year and they took it in and got me a new wheel at a deep discount. They should be able to repair your wheel real easy though as its a bit easier than a HED3. From my experience over the years anne at HEd and also steve are two of the frendliest people and easy to deal with. Just give them a call

I sent them a rear wheel last year for a re-build. I was happy with their service and turnaround and I thought their price was reasonable, too.

.

I sent my HED Jet front back to HED because of a broken hub, and they repaired it quickly and at a reasonable price.

And now I own that wheel
.

I have not had very good luck with HED lately. I bought a set last year and the rear wheel right away started popping and knocking like crazy (Cervelo P2C). I sent the wheel back directly to Hed at my cost and they said they could find nothing wrong with it, but put new bearings in it and said it was OK.

I did not even have a 100 miles on the wheel. Well I got the wheel back and put it on the bike and it did not last once around the block before it started making noise again. It was something like less then a week from a TT I was going to do so I took that wheel with and was going to try it and it went all out whack on the warm up. I could power brake it and it sounded like someone drumming a hammer on the wheel. I chagned it outwith the Vista and no problems.

So I asked Hed to just send another wheel and after months (keep in mind I live in the snow belt) they finally sent one out and I sent the old one back. I did not use the bike until this winter and had it on the trainer and after two rides on the trainer it started doing the same knocking thing again so it seemed to me. It was not real loud so last week I took the P2C out for a 20 mile ride and it is knocking all the time.

I took the complete bike and wheel set up to the LBS I bought the wheels from but not the bike and set it up on a trainer and instantly the knocking was there. They pulled the bottom bracket off to make sure it was tight and all was well. Then we took the wheel off and just by spinning the hub the bearings knocked like crazy.

I read all the time about what great wheels HED3s are but my luck has been the worst with them. IT took forever to get a wheel from them.

The wheels also have a terrible bounce to them at speeds around 17-25 mph. I am trough dissatisfied with these wheels. When I put the Easton Vista back on the bike it rides so smooth and not a boucne to it at all. Put the Heds on and it feel like I am riding square wheels.

Sorry this kind of turned into a rant but I am having terrible luck with them and only bought them do to the outstanding support they get here and around. A season later and I am starting all over again with out a rear wheel.

What wheel was this, a Hed3?

You can’t please all the people all of the time, but HED is known for having outstanding customer service. Contact HED directly and ask for Anne… as in Anne Hed.

if your HED 3 is jumping slightly you have probably not put the tubie on perfect and the jump is at the valve stem or at the overlap in the inner tape on the wheel.

I am not in a horrible state with Hed but am just disappointed with the way this has turned out.

I am hopefull that it will turn out in the end in the next couple of weeks. LBS said it sounded like I would have a wheel in a week or two.

It is just frustrating to start this year again dealing with this same problem all over again. They were at one point up for just sending a disc but since my weight is often at 200lbs or just over depending onthe year the said no disc as weight would be an issue.

I will keep that name in mind as this time the LBS is dealing with this time around. I never had to get angry with them. Last year weeks would go by and I kept being told yes wheels are coming in but then many of the wheels failed to meet there standards and they said they did not want to send a less than great wheel to me and then more weeks would go by and that is what I ended up with was a less than great wheel.

Original wheel sent in and sent back to me with new bearings installed . Went bad, bearings went loose knocked and went out of true
Next wheel bearings tight but knocks like a bill collector on a hardwood door.
Future wheel I hope silky smooth like a guy trying to dodge the IRS

Maybe they had a run of bad bearings?? and I happened to get them in two different wheels??

The wheel is a HED3 clincher.

For service issues I would contact HED directly.

In three years of distributing HED in Canada I have had only a few issues. All were dealt with in a fair & timely manner.

My experience w/HED.

I have a set of HED3C wheels that are both cracked. They had about 200 miles of use. During a race I got stuck in a crack in the pavement. I was a bloody mess and some how both wheels were trashed. I had them for about nine months. I wrote HED about what happened and they sent back a pleasant email stating that I could send them the wheels and a check for $950 and they would gladly replace them.

They stand behind their product …if you have the cash.
