Hed Turbine Blackness Longevity

I am a vain person. I want my black wheels to stay black. Looking to ditch carbon for aluminum, but only if the wheels are pretty enough. The Hed wheels are beautiful when new.

Does the Hed treatment fade like the Flo one? Or do the new Black wheels stay black?

i have 1200 miles on mine with a ton of big descents, no change in appearance yet. Love the wheels!

Any rainy rides with road grime? My Flo brake tracks looked great until my first ride in the rain.

It isn’t a treatment that wears off, it is a knurling in the aluminum. A guy I ride with has many thousands of miles on his Ardennes Blacks and they look like new.

Excellent. Follow up is - do they/will they sell them as rim-only? I just see the Belgiums listed on the Hed website.

I would say I could, but don’t know if they are through normal retail channels. Are you wanting a powertap build? Their hubs are pretty damn nice, and sounds amazing.

I just asked that question of the local wheelbuilder. He told me that the Hed Plus rims are available separately…BUT, not the versions with the Turbine brake track :frowning:

Nothing against their hubs. Just trying to save a few $$. Thinking I could repurpose some pink King hubs that are currently laced to Open Pros for a pretty unique build.

1700 miles on my Jet 6+ Black set so far and the brake tracks are as black as the day I got them…however, I’ve only ridden them in “damp” conditions a few times, nothing really wet. The roughness of the brake track seems to keep the pads from getting anything imbedded in them.

Bumping my own thread now that we are in the middle of winter and people should have plenty of wet miles logged on turbine brake tracks.

Still black like my heart, or are they starting to fade?

Hi folks,

Just wanted to ask how much of an improvement in stopping distance with the turbine black wheels? I am contemplating getting a 2015 Jet 6/9 without the brake surface ($300 cheaper vs black version) and am wondering if its it worth the extra cost.

THanks!

The improved braking is definitely worth it IMHO. I miss the performance when I switch to my old bike with aluminum rims and KoolStop salmon pads.

Hmm you have me tempted to buy the Jet blacks, by chance where and how much did you pay for your HEDs?

I got them a year ago through Excel Boulder when they had a 20% off sale on all Hed wheels. $1600 for the pair (Jet 6+ Black)

After >3k miles now, mine are still black (as your heart ;-)…but I still haven’t ridden them much in anything beyond “damp”…plenty of braking on long descents though.

Great to hear. After delaminating my second Enve front rim (first a clincher, now a tubular) I’m ready to make a change.
