HED Stinger 60/90s ? 60/HED 3?

I’m pimping out for my next big race and I’m undecided …

Front/Back; Stinger 60s

Front; Stinger 60
Back; Stinger 90

Front; Stinger 60
Back; HED 3 Carbon
(I saw this config on Macca’s bike)

… Choices, choices, choices. What are your thoughts … advantages, disadvantages for each config ? The course is flat with a headwind on the return (or is that the out ?)

Probably this subject has been hashed out a million times but just sitting around on Sunday with nothing better to do …

Still married after all these tri’s

one advantage i can think of for the HED3C is that it is more bombproof and is less likely to go out of true.

disadvantage is that the HED3C is more troublesome to pump up to pressure. You will probably need a crack pipe. Also, the stiner will probably be a stiffer wheel laterally so if you’re super powerful or can put a lot of weight on the pedals then you may get brake rub standing up.

I’d get the standard H3 though if i were you. It’s always good to have at least 1 wheel with an alu braking surface in case it rains and the carbon braking fails on you.

I think Macca had a Hed3 rear and a Hed Alps front. I didn’t quite understand the choice of a Alp over the Stinger, but what ever.

I just went through this same situation. My friend has a set of Stinger 60/90 and they are fantastic wheels. I was really set on them. When I emailed Hed though they were all about the Hed3C. A Hed3C set is lighter than a 60/90 Stinger set up, and more aero. At least thats what Hed and all the independent aero data say. Very light and fast wheelset.

You will need a crack pipe, but this is no big deal. I think it is better than having to have two different valve extenders for spare tires. I like being able to use regular valve sizes. Extenders suck. During a race, a regular inflator works just fine if you should flat. Pumping up a tire with a pump and a crack pipe isn’t hard at all.

Are the carbon brakes really that bad in the rain ?

I saw the difference in weight between a 60/90 and a 60/HED3C but didn’t think there would be an aero advantage.

Doesn’t bother me to inflate with a crack pipe.

I’ll give it a try for brake rub. I have a pair of Shimano training wheels (R560) and they rub when I really crank it on the climb.

Thanks
