HED Kona Coast - Anyone Ride One

These appear to be almost mythical wheels…I have heard about them, seen one grainy picture of one…never seen it in person. Anyone ride one? What do you think of it?

Never heard of them. Althought that isn’t surprising. I find it hard to follow HED. Every year they seem to bring in a new model that is very different from the old and ditch the old altogether. Like the super light disc? Why drop that for a spoked disc?

And why only have 23mm wide rims - seems to be cornering the market so to speak.

I just don’t get HED.

That aside, if they made a clincher disc that wasn’t spoked on the inside and a clincher version of the stinger 9 I’d probably get that as a set up.

Some info about them here:

.

That’s it…in the front of the picture…anyone ride one of those?

I’ve ridden the HED3D disc that is very mch like that one but does not have the holes between the spokes. it was a full carbon disc. Take a HED3 and fill in the gap between the spokes…= HED3d.

I couldn’t really tell any difference between any of the discs I have owned, including…Campy Ghibli, J-Disc, Hed Regular, HED3D and currently a Zipp disc. Oh, I did also own a Renn 575 but sold this as I could flex it into my brake pads on a good climb.

It would seem to my very novice aero eyes that the raised spokes would impact the aero benefits of this wheel, say as opposed to say a zipp disc

It’s not an ideal disc shape, and the tri-spokes have no aero benefit on a disc - they’re all structural. The advantage to this one was that it wasn’t a disc, and so could be used in Kona (turns out it couldn’t, see the linked thread above).

I’ve seen pics of pros using HED3 DEEP’s, but never seen them available for sale.

I have a pair of HED3’s (650 clinchers) and love them, even on very windy days. IF a HED3 Deep rear was available I would have got that instead of the regular HED3, as it’s closer to a disc, without the hassle of not being able to use a disc at Kona (if I ever get a lottery slot. LOL)

HED seems to make lots of prototype stuff that never seems to make it to market. Very frustrating.

This what you are talking about??? They look pretty sweeet

You can send you hed3’s into hed and they will convert them into deeps for an additional charge.

As long as the cost isn’t stupid, then I will look into it and consider it.

Beyond potentially being faster, (and I need all the technology I can buy, otherwise I will have to resort to training!) they just look cooler (when they are deeper at the back than the front. hehehe

You can go Disco.
