I have a non-C2 HED Jet Disc that I got about 1.5 years ago, just when they were coming out. I obviously use it only for racing, and I missed much of last season due to injury, so I’ve only now been racking up a decent numbers of miles on it.
I’ve found it to be REALLY laterally flexy. Like, if I grab the top of it and move it back and forth, very little pressure is enough to make it touch the brake calipers. It also easily rubs the chainstays when putting in out-of-the saddle efforts or on hard corners.
I’ve compared it to other spoked wheels mounted on the same frame and it’s much more flexible (i.e. it’s not that my frame is a noodle). I’ve also compared it to a Zipp 909 and it’s a good deal more flexy.
Is this normal for this wheel? It’s not a huge issue as I’m only using it for races and I don’t do a lot of out-of-the-saddle efforts, but I’m surprised at just how noticeable it is. As I said this was one of the very first ones made, so I’m wondering if spoke tension is low or something. Anyone?
I have a non c2 jet. Even on hard out of the saddle climbs I’ve never had a problem. I do a 2-3 tri’s each year that have 18-20 90degree corners and never noticed any problem with it on 2 different bikes.
It doesn’t make that cool disc sound which is my only complaint. But pair it with a zipp 1080 and you get the disc sound so it’s all good.
It absolutely is NOT normal for that wheel. The HED Jet disc is WAY stiffer (laterally) than most anything else out there. I just came in from a check-out ride on my non-C2 Jet disc (TT on Wednesday) mounted in my Cervelo P4. It’s one of the only discs I’ve used in the P4 where I can set the rear brake pads close enough to actually have some braking power in the rear without getting rubbing from flexing.
something’s not right- as that is not normal with the wheel you have… maybe a spoke is not right, bearings need to be adjusted or are loose, etc. Double check your skewers, too. I have a C2 Jet disc- and it’s the stiffest (laterally) disc that I have ever owned and also the most true- compared to old the very old HED disc (definitely flexed), zipp smooth disc, zipp dimpled disc, and the old J-Disc. Take it to a shop that knows what they are doing or give HED a call.
Thanks all; the wheel is still nice and true, which makes me think that it’s not a broken spoke. And, the bearings seem nice and tight; the movement seems like it comes from the middle of the wheel, like the spoke tension just isn’t as high as it should be or something. I’ll talk to my LBS where I got it, and also talk to HED.
my jet disc is the same moves a couple of mm either side when pressing at top…i contacted hed when i got this and they sent me a small washer which made absolutley no diffence…i have never noticed it rubbing brakes or chain stay but would prefer if this lattereal movement wasnt present if you could keep us infoemed how you get on.
Drew - Did you ever get your Hed Jet disc fixed? I just dusted mine off and rode it at a TT last night and noticed it is flexing a lot to the point where it seems unsafe to ride. I seem to recall a little movement with it in the past but it seems like it’s gotten worse. I’m going to drop by my LBS and see what they say but I wanted to see if you’d gotten anywhere with yours.
