HED Jet 90 vs Flashpoint 80

Thinking on buying one of these wheels, any first hand experience that you’d like to share in order to factor into my decision?

Both are good wheels, from known manufactures, I just want a bit more insight from people actually using the wheels

Thanks

I have the Hed Jet90’s and love them. Lighter and deeper than the flashpoint wheels. I also love that they are supremely stiff. Others may not like that.

Since the Jets use the new, wider, more aerodynamic lower rolling resistance rims these are the choice.

Go with the Jet 90

Have you seen any actual data that supports the hypothesis that wider rims give lower rolling resistance?

…or, that the wider wheels are actually MORE aerodynamic than their narrow predecessors (with appropriate width tires, of course)?

Ok I’m kinda new to this whole carbon wheels etc.

But I want to use a clincher wheelset, and If I go with a Jet69 Combo, does that mean the rims are going to be carbon?

And if so, does that mean I have to use “carbon brake pads” or is that only for tubular wheels?

With the clinchers you won’t need to change your brake pads, they are just like your regular wheels. You only need carbon pads for the tubulars.

Ok so one last question. I’m going with clinchers because A. I’m used to changing clincher wheels, etc. vs the glueing of Tubulars, etc.

Is it that big of a speed difference between clincher vs tubular, or is it basically “comfort of wheel choice”.

The HED’s will be carbon clinchers I’m pretty sure. That means that you will have to use the carbon specific brake pads as the braking surface will be carbon or basalt or whatever and can’t hold up to normal pads (too hard). Anyway, I use carbon clinchers and it’s no big deal to change the pads. I just removed the Shimano pads (1 little screw on each brake shoe) and slipped the new ones right in and tightened the bolt. They are already lined up and everything. Took about 5 mins total. Anyway, I love the carbon clinchers and I think you will too. I wouldn’t discount the Flashpoints though. I rode the 60’s and they are pretty sweet.

Well I’m down to Hed 69 jets or the Flashpoint 60s wheelsets.

I keep hearing flashpoints are heavier, but honestly I’m not even sure if the weight will make that big of a difference for me. I’ve not really read much comparision between these 2 wheels, as my budget is about $1500 on wheels or there about.

the clinchers (jet 90) have an aluminum braking surface so no need to change. The Jet 90 are the tubulars that have carbon braking surfaces which you will need to change the pads.

Ummm…no. Hed Jets have aluminum rims.

No Sir, that is what we have you for!

No, there’s not a big difference in speed of clincher vs. tubular. Comfort is probably a bigger factor, and Jet C2s at 90PSI are darn near comparable in comfort to a tubular.

clinchers now have about the same preformance but don’t be afraid of tubulars
.

Ummm…sorry my bad. But nice smart a** comment in true Slowtwitch fashion.

Sounds like an assignment for AFM!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but on the last few RR tests he smartly ran a Pro2Lite in both a 20 and a 23, with the 23 besting the 20.

Wouldn’t this imply ‘wider is better’?

I would think that there is less of a chance of flatting with a 23, and a better ride quality. intangibles but i’m just saying…
