Are you sure the ZIPP is lighter than the HED New Standard?

Hey Paul, do you guys have the Hed disks yet? I was working with Al on some custom stuff for them but didn’t know if they are actual around and shipping yet. Hmmm, choices choices to replace my aging Zipp…

PS, thanks for the email, sorry I was swamped after 70.3 worlds, been a bit behind on everything

Whats this new standard?

The New Standard was released at this years Interbike show in Las Vegas. I think I had a pic in my show report.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure the ZIPP 900 clincher is 1240g or so & the ZIPP 900 tubular is 930g. HED’s New Standard is around 850g.

It is my understanding, that there will be a limited edition production & only 100 pieces are to be built for 2007. Pricing should be appropriate for cutting edge. If you want cutting edge, you will bleed. If you have to ask “How much?”, you can’t afford it  In Canada I have stores & sponsored athletes who have commited to New Standards sight unseen.

Are we really comparing the Zipp disc to something that may or may not exist? I know that Hed showed a new disc at Interbike, but that is a far cry from it actually being available. If it never comes out this wont be the first time Hed fails to deliver on a new disc. They did the same thing a few years ago when they were coming out with a flat disc that never showed up.

The Zipp tubular disc is lists at 930 on their website. My Zipp disc from last year came in at 870. I have no idea why it was actually lighter. As far as the clincher goes, I have no idea, but I did talk to the folks at Hed in person and they thought it would ultimately be at 1000 grams when released even thought their prototype was at 870. They also told me it was going to go for $1200 which would definitely lead me to the Renn Maderia at $700.

I forgot - I was told that the new disc was tubular only. Maybe that will change when/if it comes out.

Tai-
We will be the first to get the new disk when they are available, which they will be for 07- amongst some other really cool stuff that was not at show…

Keep an eye on a certain few pro’s bikes to see some of the new HED stuff…

We just weighed a batch of rear racing wheels.

Results:

Regular 404 = 650g
Am Classic 404 = 720
Zipp Disc = 930
Z4 w/ tire and skewer = 970
Zipp disc w/ tire and skewer = 1290
HED Superlight disc w/ no tire or skewer = 1320 (but it costs half as much)

How much for a Hed 3 carbon rim? the website says 670g for 700 front. http://www.hedcycling.com/wheels/hed3carbon.php

You inspired me, I weighed a few wheels here. BTW - I calibrated the scale with a 1kg weight.
H3C 662g front, 818g rear
Stinger 50 568g front, 787g rear
Jet 50 693g front, 896g rear

ZIPP web site says
404 clincher 778g front, 884g rear
404 tubular 570g front, 682g rear
