Does anybody else get headaches from excercising in the heat. I get them from running over an hour in the Floirda late morning heat or riding for a couple of hours in the heat. I drink fluids and take in electrolytes, but a few hours or sometimes half a day later I get bad headaches. I’m thinking it may just be deydration, but I take in fluids before and after. It doesn’t always happen. Any thoughts on prevention. Thanks
Do you wear sunglasses?
Do you wear sunglasses?
Good thinking. I do wear sunglasses, good polarized lenses too. Yesterday I ran 12 miles between 9:30 and 11:30 and it was really hot/humid, but not too sunny and I woke up in the middle of the night with a brutal headache.
Since headache can be a sign of hyponatremia, you might try upping the salt content of the beverages with which you rehydrate during and after exercise.
How about any other stresses in your life?
I can get killer headaches towards the end of the day if work is brutal. Deals closing, tough meetings, lack of good food throughout the day, a little too much coffee. It seems to hit me about 4 in the afternoon every 3 or 4 months or so.
Evaluate the other stressors in your life other than training as well.
I had that problem when I used to play hockey early in the morning. Drank a ton of water and it didn’t help. I know why now.
One day I happened to have a bottle of Gatorade in my car and drank it after I skated. Never got another headache after a morning skate again.

Every frelling summer, even with generous consumption of energy drinks and eating enough salt every day to make a cadriologist blush. Though the extra salt does seem to mitigate things to some degree.
I have this same issue. Many times the duration is too short for dehydration to be an issue, but I find that dehydration makes it worse. For me the issue seems to be my head overheating (this can also happen on a hot day with a lot of direct sunlight when I’m not exercising). I’ve found that cooling by head (esp. forehead) is the best way to avoid this. It started to hit me at Wildflower this year, but I kept my hat soaked and kept the headaches at bay.
