Heart rate monitors run/bike

I am new to triathlons and was wondering if it would be better to have 1 computer, like the Garmin FR 305, or have one running heart monitor (Polar 200 with foot pod) and then another one on the bike (Polar 200cad) for cadence. Any comments?

Unless you use a Garmin 50, the Garmin will not withstand the swim portion unless you protect it. The Polar models can be used in the swim portion and are waterproof for swimming.

Upto now I had been using a Polar S150/200cad combination. My S150 just gave out and I probably will go with the R400/CS200 combination. The equivalent on the Garmin side would be to use the Garmin 50/Edge combination which I am also considering.

I use a Timex Ironman 30 lap and like it ($70). I wear it for all my racing.

For training, I sometimes use the Garmin 305, I don’t like it for racing though. I don’t feel confident or comfortable with it swimming. While it’s not BIG, I still feel like it’s a little big on my wrist and the screen angles away, so it’s a little tougher to read. (I’m 6’2" 180 so I’m not a liittle guy).

While the timex says it’s Water Proof, I think 90 feet, I won’t use mine for scuba diving, any more.
