Can anyone recommend a heart rate monitor that doesn’t go wonky after a few months? I have been through 3 wahoo tickrs this year that just get sporadic over time.
I change batteries, use HR gel etc… they just seem to go bad after a bit

I am a heavy and fairly salty sweater, which is what usually makes HRMs go bad. I have a polar H10 which has been going strong for a few years now though. I just remove the sensor and throw the strap in the wash every few months, no complaints.
I’ve had similar experiences with Wahoo Tickr, when the most recent one broke I got a Polar H10, so far so good and just work, which is all I’m after
.
I’ve had a lot of issues with hrm in the past but I’ve had a good experience with the Garmin HRM Dual over the past couple years.
Same experience here with the TICKR. Went though 2 in the last 3 years, plus one that didn’t work out-of-the-box. Replaced battery, did the reset (insert battery backward for a few seconds), updated the firmware, always wet the sensors, cleaned, etc. Typical symptom was it’d work ok for 10-15 minutes, then the reading would stall (stay at the same value) or go to 223 BPM and stay there.
After the latest one failed I just picked-up a Garmin dual. Working ok so far.
Polar HP10 is the best strap I’ve ever used. Easy to clean. Easy to replace the battery. Garmin and Wahoo could learn a lot from Polar, here…
As has been mentioned here, Polar is the Gold standard. I am on my 3rd generation of product and couldn’t be happier with the product and service, when needed.
The 4iii Viiiva has been pretty bombproof for me after multiple garmin failures. Battery power seems excellent as well.
Had a Scosche Rhythm+ for years that finally sprung a leak after I put it through the washing machine. Still worked once dry though.
Have replaced with a Rhythm+ 2.0 - expecting many more years out of it.
Much more comfy than a chest band.
The older Garmins are good for 4-5 years of hard use. Might not have Bluetooth though.
I’ve had a Scosche and some no-name BLE heart rate monitors that work fine for a year or so and then stop being picked up by head units. I now use a Polar H7 which has been rock solid for years.
Go with the company that created the first monitor, Polar. Mine is 2 years old and only requires battery replacement. Even made it through my dog trying to bite it in half.
There is a thread here with mostly good things to report about Coospo HRMs. Pretty inexpensive (relatively) and available from Amazon. I don’t have one, just redirecting to an alternative that might be inexpensive enough to try…
Polar H10 user here. Always works. Highly accurate HRV data if you are into that thing like I am. Make sure to remove the HRM pod from the strap when done working out and dry it off. Put the strap in the washer every few weeks and you will be good to go for years.
Does the Polar H10 work well with your trainer?
Polar H10 good to go
Swim with it 5x per week. Bike 5x/ week
Just hang it up to dry in the bathroom on the shower rod
Never took the pod off
Never washed it
Does your h10 roll through the battery?
Does your h10 roll through the battery?
1 year still working
No new battery needed

I had Polar years ago & told a story of a “checked bag” at IM Brazil (the took your bag behind in a supposed safe area). I didn’t race with it, but had it in the bag for warm up (raced per RPE)…when the race was over my Polar watch was stolen from the bag when I got it back–someone obviously went through the bag when I got it back. There is a guy here on the forum who was really cool about it–his name was Wayne@PolarUSA or something. He sent me a new HRM (it wasn’t a GPS but a HRM) after he read my IM Brazil theft issue. I can say Polar was awesome for service when I used them back in the day. I still have my original in the original box from about 1986.
I just ended up going Garmin for the GPS functions they had & still use my 920XT without issues for a long time now (returned one for a refurbished one after original failed). The problem with Garmin is I get about 1 to 1.5 years if I’m lucky out of the straps (they are not cheap either). The Polar is much more comfortable I think and durable as well has has the quality dialed in all aspects of the strap. I have not used a Polar GPS Watch so I can’t speak as to the watch part itself/GPS functionality.
There is the new one called Coros, but know absolutely nothing about them nor know anyone with one. They are spending a lot of advertising $$ though & sponsor Kipchoge.
My H10 is still working fine. I make sure to unclip the monitor from the strap after use, which helps battery life, which obviously will depend on the amount if use, but I’m getting 8 months from 12-15hrs a week.
