Heart rate monitor for newbie?

Hello folks,

I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for heart rate monitors? Don’t need anything fancy I don’t think, simple should do me just fine. Would imagine a chest strap is a good idea? I also generally train with my Android cell phone strapped to my arm for music, so if there’s anything that happens to work with those, that would be wicked-awesome!

Thank you all!

Polar has a wide variety of HRM to choose from (basic $ to advanced $$$$). I personally use and recommend them, some of my friends have garmins (good gps but sometimes flakey in between buildings they say) and a couple have suunto and timex. Read reviews online and you’ll definitely find one that fits what you want/need.

Just to add, I started cheap, I bought the Omron brand back then and after a few months the HR chest strap broke. I decided to get a polar 625 then, pricier than the basic ones but it’s still alive and kicking since 2008. I think it’s well worth the price to invest in a good HRM if you’re in it for the long haul and want to train via HR zones too.

Look at the polar (or others as well) heart rate Bluetooth monitor , it should connect to your phone.

I use this Timex T5J031 HR monitor: http://amzn.com/B000P8VWRC it’s cheap, has a replaceable battery, and it can be worn during the swim if you want to race with it (although the HR feature won’t function until you’re on land so turn it on at t1). I am really happy with mine so far.

Or, for a bit more $ you can have GPS too!

OP: I’d skip Polar. My Garmins have been more reliable than my Polar watches, and the software/interface is nicer too IMO. Polar isn’t bad, perhaps Wayne@Polar would like to chim in?
