Heart rate dips

So… I haven’t been able to figure out if this is just the HR strap freaking out from time to time, or if there’s an underlying problem… I use the Garmin HRM-Tri currently, but it did the same when I was using the original strap that came with my old Ambit 2. I had a Mio at some point as well but I can’t pinpoint accurately a run where I used it.

Are these HR dips normal (aka, just the strap doing something weird from time to time)? I always thought so, but someone recently asked me why my HR data was like that, theirs wasn’t… Happens in bike and run (I posted 2 runs, it’s easier to see on runs, especially on treadmill).

Looks strange. Hard to imagine a 20 bpm drop is real heading into some of those down hills. You stated that it happened with your old strap too. So it is probably environmental and not related to the garmin hrm tri device.

How tight is the strap? Are you a heavy sweater?

Indoors it is drier and it could be that an electrostatic charge builds up from your shirt. This could explain the increased frequency during a treadmill run. If you sweat a lot, then this is unlikely.

If the strap is loose then there is your answer. It should be pretty snug and not bounce around too much for best results.

I had pretty much the exact same thing. Eventually I was able to correlate it with burping. Evidently, when I burp I get a slight vagal stimulation that causes the heart rate to drop a little. For me, it tended to happen about once per mile while running. I was able to see it when I was on the trainer. SO not sure if it happens with more than just a burp for me, but I do not tend to see it with coughing.

ing a Different scale, so mine do not appear as drastic. The bigger spikes are artifacts cause it was damn cold for this run.
I ended up getting a 24 hour holter test to rule out anything big (I wore it for a trainer ride and for a run).

You might be up to something with the discharges, although I run shirtless on the TM… I get shocked like a madman on the TM every time I touch the control panel… I’m not a super heavy sweater (though not a light sweater either). This treadmill run was Z1 though so I didn’t sweat much. I have to check if I get grounded, these disappear… might be tough on the TM but doable on the bike…

Strap is tight.

Just a follow up… This was it. Thanks, I would never have guessed that.

Bonkers. Glad you got to the bottom of it.

Nice, glad you got to the bottom of it.

I did not get any advice as to prevent anything, so I am just continuing on.

TBH, apart from my kids thinking it’s funny I burp and go pee all the time while I’m on the TM, there ain’t much I can do.
