Hey all,
I’m pretty clueless about bike maintainance so bear with me. Is it possible to switch from a quill stem to a threadless stem and headset?
Thanks

Sure, but you have to replace your entire front end. you will need the threadless headset (in the proper size for your hedtube … either 1" or 1 1/8"), a fork with a threadless steerer tube (this is the single tube on the top of the fork that goes thru the frames headtube) and a clamp on stem.
not to be snotty, but if you have to ask this question, it would be wise to have a reputable bike/tri shop help you select the needed parts and then install them correctly. The switch isn’t mechanically difficult, but it is easy to screw up if you don’t know what your doing.
cheers, and best of luck with your upgrade.
Yes…as mentioned above.
The easiest route is to get one of these, providing your end goal is changeable stem sizes.

There is no real valid reason to make this change when you consider the money and labor involved. You are a FOOL if you think that you are going to be able to replace the races and crown if you dont know what all the parts are to start with. Sounds like a project that is sure to ruin a headset crown race and a fork that would both be new…I would go to your LBS and let them talk you out of it…no benifit for the money.
