I just bulit up a Quintana Roo PR5 and am not to happy with the Cane Creek headset that the frame came with, it’s pretty tall. Can anyone recomend a headset that will leav little to no space between the head tube and the stem so it’s fully slammed? I’m running a TriRig Alpha bar on the bike and it just looks silly with the tall headset on there.
What is the exact model of the headset?
Cane Creek even sells something called the SlamSet, but that’s compatible only with certain types of headsets (e.g. ZeroStack top).
Although having said that, you may just have a really tall dust cover, and that could be replaced with something shorter
I used one of these on my road bike, cheap as chips. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/233726163609
Look into replacing just the dust cover. I got one from Cobb/jcobb/speed and comfort to replace the FSA that was in my bike.
Just before you go to a thin or near non-existent dust cover, just check out the ‘why did my steerer tube just fail’ threads on the forum. Particularly if it’s a carbon steerer.
Sometimes that tall dust cover is tall for a REALLY good reason.
I second a Cane Creek Slamset I used on my last tri bike build. You can just but the top bearing and dust cap.

As long as we’re on this topic, I’m interested in it too. But my ignorance of headset standards is profound.
I’ve got a CAAD 10 that has… well… whatever headset Cannondale shipped with it. At the top of the frame there is this tapered piece that goes right up the handlebar. It’s a bit tall and I’d like it to be shorter. Is that what you mean by “dust cap”? Because searching on that term doesn’t give me many hits. Can I just buy the slam set and use the dust cap and ignore the rest?
One the Cane Creek website I see 4 different varieties of the slam set in the dropdown box. How do I tell what to buy?
Here is what’s on my bike now
Tririg makes one and theres a website called certified slammed that does some as well

^^ This.
I have come across these tall dust covers on an ever increasing number of brands. In many cases it’s a way to force the minimum 10cm of spacers that some combinations of headsets and forks require. Not all combinations need it but does yours?
If you are slamming the stem just for aesthetics, well missing front teeth doesn’t look great either.
I’ve ridden Cannondale road bikes for close to 20 years and they generally come with a low dust cap which is the tapered piece from your frame to your stem. Most of that is basically just integrated spacers to your cap to raise your stem. You could quite easily get a lower profile cap and drop your handlebars by 15-20mm would be my guess and just add spacers if you need it a little higher. Your local bike shop should be able to sort you very cheaply without having to buy a Slamset or buy a lower profile dust cap online.
As for the Slamset there were two options the ZS41 or ZS44. One has a lower profile than the other by 2.8mm or something from memory. The other options are bearing sizes required for your bike.

Can you suggest some of those threads so I can read them?
