school me on how to best position my head in aero. I am not sure if its just push your head down as far as possible or if its more in the shoulders. I train alone due to job and location so no one to have look at my position in aero. People talk about turtling so is that movement in the head or shoulders or both. Thx
You generally want the helmet to be inline/level with you torso. The best trick I have ever heard is to think of pulling your chin towards the stem. This drops the head without looking down or curving your back.
There’s no simple answer on this, but there are a few things to keep in mind.
Your head position is affected by your ability to hold the position over time. A position that is aerodynamic but not sustainable isn’t really all that aerodynamic in the end. But if you think you can develop your neck and upper shoulder strength with practice, you can start working on holding certain positions.
The type of helmet you have also affects your position, but the type of position you can hold should affect the helmet you choose. The folks here who have gone to wind tunnels and tried out different helmets have reported that different helmets work better or worse for different riders. There is no simple answer on which helmet is actually best.
In general, you should find one that seems to fit well and allows you to get into what looks like a fast position. Anyone who tells you they know which helmet is best is making things up. Until you can get into a wind tunnel with several helmets, you won’t know for sure.
If you have a tail on your helmet, you need to get good at holding your position and should try to keep the tail down and close to your upper-back. The gap under the tail should be minimized as much as reasonably possible. This might mean pushing the tail down until the lens lifts up to what seems like a little too much. That’s not a big deal. And you can wear sunglasses or use the lens on the front. There is no substantial aero loss for going without the lens in most cases.
If you have a snub helmet, such as a Catlike Rapid, it is often best to keep your head down. This can seem a little disconcerting at first, but it can be learned.
Don’t be afraid to mess around with this.
I have an advantage 2 helmet and have no issues w holding my position in aero. I will try the chin towards the stem. Thx
