It’s that time of year again and I’m looking for reviews on head lamps for winter trail running. So far I’m leaning toward the Petzl Myo XP. Anyone have any input on this model or other recommendations? Searching didn’t yield too many recent results.
I’m currently using a Petzl Tikka XP. I really like it a lot. Its light and casts a nice white beam. Has a diffuser for more area lighting if you need it. They also make a version called the TacTikka that has an optional over the head strap for
more stability. I like that it doesn’t have the big battery pack on the back of the head too. I also have a Black Diamond Gemini and a Princeton Tec Aurora but I almost always grab the Tikka XP. My wife uses a Black Diamond Zenix IQ and loves it. Check out http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/ for reviews from people that are way to excited about flashlights.
i need one too… all my runs are in the dark on a trail and my little flashlight isn’t cutting it. i ran thru dog shit last night without knowing - til i got home and the whole house smelled.
I, for some reason, love lights and headlamps more than anything. And the Myo XP looks pretty impressive. I believe it has a 3w bulb, which would be impressive because my Black Diamond has a 1 w and it’s pretty bright. Check out the link below, it goes into tons of detail on light reviews.
I’ve recently run with my buddy’s Petzl Zipka and it kicks ass. I think the MyoXP would be even better. I’m probably going to replace my PrincetonTec Aurora with the MyoXP if it ever dies.
Funny you should ask… I staring at one right now on my desk. My sister bought me a North 49 headlamp. It takes three AAA batteries & has 4 bright white LED’s. I think she paid less than $10 Cdn.
$10 cdn?? that’s pretty damn cheap compared to the others on this thread!
With respect to the MyoXP mentioned by Nipsy, my wife and I both have one and have used them for some adventure runs where a little more light is needed than for normal running. You really don’t notice the extra weight compared to what a TikkaXP or something smaller would be and they are pretty comfortable.
I think she bought it at a camping type store. I am running on the road & rail trails, so for me it’s about being seen. If I was running off road or forest trails I’d want a better light, but for my needs, the North 49 does the job.
BTW - The AAA rechargable batteries & charger cost much more than the headlamp
A point about rechargeables - if you’re like me and you only ever use the headlamp on high (why would i ever use low, i want to blind people, dammit) - rechargeables are a great buy!
Dependng on how much light you need, the Sigma Sport HedLed is sweet for the $$. It’s only ~$20 and puts out a good beam. It’d be good for road running and maybe some trail, but it’s not a full on miners light or anything.
I like to run in the dark holding a small kerosene lamp. It reminds of the olden days when there were no batteries. Also, alternating hands gets my weight training done.

Kerosene lamps work really well if you run down the street yelling, “the British are coming, the British are coming.”
Does anyone know if someone makes a headlamp that has a small bulb in the back so cars can see ya? You know, so hicks have plenty of time to get their beer cans ready to throw at you.
