Head Coaching Position: Cal Triathlon

Dear Slowtwitch Community:

My name is Varun Pemmaraju and I am the President for the Cal Triathlon Team at the University of California, Berkeley. Cal Tri is one of the largest athletics teams at UC Berkeley, one of the largest sports clubs and the largest collegiate triathlon club in the nation, and one of the most decorated collegiate triathlon teams in history. We have almost 200 members, including first-time swimmers, bikers, and runners, as well as National Champions and Olympic hopefuls. As a team, we have won 6 National Championships and the Team Spirit Award at USAT Collegiate Nationals.

Our coach, John Dahlz (JD), retired from the position after 5 years of leading this team as both an coach (as well as 6 years as an athlete), and thus we are looking to fill the vacancy.

In our ongoing search for a new coach, we of course thought we’d go ahead and post a listing here on Slowtwitch. I’ve also attached the complete Job Description here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B2qkUWdxDnRVMm5lYW5QNW1vQzA/edit?usp=sharing

If you’re at all interested (or know someone who is), please let me know (president@caltriathlon.com)! Thanks for your time, and hope to hear from you soon!

Best,
Varun

Just letting those of you still reading this know that we will not be accepting applicants after July 18 and will have a decision by beginning of August.

If you can talk to that guy in the other thread and organise a green card - I may know someone who is interested.

Which thread are you referring to? I think it would extremely difficult (but not impossible) to try arranging a green card via an employment offer, especially one that straddles the line between part and full-time.

I just got back from San Francisco where I had never been before. I’d love to move there (as soon as you can buy a home for less than $1M)
Beautiful area though.

Did Paulo’s green card run Out ? Lucky for all involved here there is a thread where he can get a new one :0)

I will copy your post for the Forward Motion Race Club (FoMo) yahoo groups. There’s a lot of talented folks there who would either be qualified coaches or know people who would be qualified and we’re all pretty close to Berkeley.

GO BEARS !

Just to wrap things up here:

The New Cal Triathlon Head Coach is…

DEAN HARPER!

At his peak, Dean was a top-10-in-the-world Ironman athlete at the World Championships in Kona, was the first person to win the prestigious Wildflower Triathlon, and was also the first EVER person to grace the cover of Triathlete Magazine. He also served as the President of the Forward Motion Race Club in Walnut Creek, one of the largest age-group teams in California. He is also the father of two of our most studly and prominent team members, Greg and Shelley Harper.

Cal Triathlon has seen many golden years across its history, and with Dean’s vision, knowledge, guidance, mentorship, and understanding of collegiate triathlon, I have absolutely no doubts that we will continue to be at forefront of collegiate triathlon in every imaginable way. In former Coach JD’s wise words, “Cal Tri is so lucky to have finally upgraded from me”. We would like to wish Dean all the best, and look forward to being able to call him “Coach” this year, and for many more after.

Go Bears!
