Hawaii 70.3 bike transport or rental

I’m signed up for the Hawaii 70.3 in May, but was wondering the best way to ship my bike that far from North Carolina. I was thinking it might be better just to rent one there and probably cheaper. Any suggestions? Or places to rent one close to the race and how much it would be?
Thanks

Bikeworks in Kona will have a good bike for you, for cheaper than UPS etc will get a bike here. I would call them now and reserve something though. Linda is awesome

I am having the same issue. I was thinking TriBikeTransport, but they’ve had a “logistics coming soon” for Hawaii 70.3 for the last 4 months and I’ve emailed them about possible drop locations and have heard nothing back. My plan now is to borrow a bike box and ship with United Airlines (shipping will cost $85 each way).

I was a little unsure about renting since I have to ride that bike for 56 miles…seems like a long way to go a bike that you are not used to riding.

I was going to use TriBike transport as well, but not sure if they are going to be shipping from the east coast. I’m not worried about a bike rental as long as they fit me half way decent. It’s only a half. lol

Are you flying yourself by United as well? Is it guaranteed only $85.00 each way? I’ve heard some horror stories of being charged more once you get to the counter, and then at that point you pretty much have no recourse. Also worried about it being lost for a couple days then you end up just being a spectator.

I’m not sure if the $85 is United’s standard rate or a special rate (I have 1K status on United). I was also told that FedEx (probably UPS as well) and a bike box is cheaper than TriBikeTransport. I am not sure if this is right given it is to Hawaii, but wouldn’t hurt to check it out. My first preference is still TriBikeTransport - paying the $225, the piece of mind it will get there in time, and only having to take off the petals is a pretty sweet deal.

Tribiketransport was a dream to use last year. They don’t even take your bike apart. Walking 50 feet to drop your bike off after the race was the sweet!

I looked into every other way to ship and it seems you can get good rates coming back, but shipping to Hawaii is $300+ via UPS or Fedex.

I also looked into renting a bike through BikeWorks, but they kept putting me off. It seems they did not want to rent at their usual rate, and came out with “special” more expensive rates for that race

If tribike transport doesn’t offer shipping. I don’t think I’ll even do it at this point. It’s getting crazy expensive. It would be cool, but from the east coast it’s becoming to much of a hassle. I knew I should have done it when I lived in CA. :o(

The main guy (I think) for tri-bike transport out here in Hawaii moved away so I believe that’s the reason it’s not set up yet. Some of his buddies set up a new company www.kamaainaracing.com. I’m not sure if he’s going to do mainland shipping or just in state. I just finished up an ad for him about 5min ago…

Give him a shout and ask him, maybe he’ll add the service.
