Having trouble syncing Strava with the training log

When I try to connect and sync Strava for the challenges, nothing happens when I tap the orange “Connect to Strava” button. My accounts were connected and synced at one point. I tried to reset them to go back and get some older activities and that’s when it stopped completely.

Heyyyyy,

I just looked and it seems like we hit a Strava rate limit. Go ahead and try again (it’s aggregated across all slowtwitch, and I think it’s ramped up at the beginning of the 100/100). I’ll see if I can’t get the limits increased.

Thanks,

-Eric

I still get the same thing. I suspect I created some issue when I disconnected my ST from Strava and now am trying to reconnect. Specifically, I think when I click the connect with Strava button I’m supposed to get a dialogue box to log in or validate that connection. That dialogue never comes up. The connect with Strava button just greys out and sits there. Hope that helps locate the issue.

I dug through the logs and I’m wondering if, because my code doesn’t respect rate limit hits very well, that Strava got fed up and invalidated the authorization token they give our system. Could you do the reset authentication option again (same as you did on the 14th) and re-allow the training log access? Let’s see if that makes it better.

I also put in additional logging today.

Thanks,

-Eric

Still no dice. When I hit the button shown below it just grays out and does nothing. It does the same inaction on multiple devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac OS laptop and multiple Windows laptops. I never get the next dialogue that asks me to authenticate to Strava or confirm to allow Strava connection.

I really think it’s something specific to my account and has to do with something that got wonky when I disconnected Strava, disconnected FB from Strava, and tried to reset all of the connections.

The image doesn’t seem to have worked.

In any case, I don’t show that you’re clicking the ‘Reset Authentication’ button on the Strava page. It will be the same no matter which device you do it on: the connection is between the training log and your strava, authorized by you, and not your device.

You’re definitely getting an error that is unusual. Bear with us here, we’ll get it worked out.

In any case, I’m going to nuke your saved information on our side.

Thanks,

-Eric

That was it! All working now. Thanks.

Next question…

Is there a way to pull in activities going back to Jan 1 of this year? I hadn’t noticed my account wasn’t sync’ing and hadn’t looked since the end of last year’s 100/100. I’m missing most of the year even with the 120 day pull.

Hooray! That’s great news.

I will look into this. The trick is not blowing our rate limits at Strava with hundreds of requests. I think I can get you there, though.

OK, sir. I’ve got this working – gave the Strava sync page a little going-over and it works much more clearly and better now. I fixed a bug that was possibly causing duplicate records (for long synchronizations), pulled the limit down to 100 at a time, and upped the timeframe to a year.

Our Strava limit is 600 per hour, and we commonly, with everybody in the challenge, are at a couple hundred, so my request of you is, please don’t hit this more than 3-4 times per hour if it’s returning 100 activities.

Other than that, you are good to go back a year, and it would be easy to make it go even farther if anybody needs it.

Cheers,

-Eric

Eric,
Is there anyway to sync with Strava that would allow me to add January-Febuary activities? When I joined Slowtwitch/Training Log I used the sync 200 activities and the year timespan but my last 200 activities at the time only brought me back to 2/16/22.

It looks like you have mentioned being able to change the time span, is there a way to have the ‘end date’ of the sync period not be the current day.

I’m guessing the answer is no, and its not a big deal but I figured I would ask.

Hey Sam,

So the 200 limit is only for a single request. So if you want to get a full year’s worth, and it’s >200 activities, just repeat it until they all have come through.

I’ve thought about that too: adding not just a dumb span but a flexible window for pulling activities. It wouldn’t be too difficult, if it comes to that. I’m watching the logs, so I’ll see your requests come through.

Eric,
I appreciate the assistance, I was able to get everything from 2022 (as you probably know by now)

Awesome, that’s great!

Resurrecting this old thread in hopes I can get help. Three days ago Strava had a sync error and now my training log seems stuck in trying to sync with Strava. I have removed my connection and then reset it up and tried to sync but getting the same result.

Any ideas?

Yeah! I’ll fix that for you.

Thank you Eric!

If you are sure your accounts were connected and synced at one point, try disconnecting and reconnecting to Strava. To do this, tap the orange “Connect to Strava” button and then select “Disconnect”. Then go back and tap the button again to reconnect. If this still doesn’t work, please contact customer service for further assistance.

Thanks! Eric fixed it with his actions.

Eric, I need the same kind of help. I haven’t been able to sync since mid March.

Hey Joel,

Sorry about the trouble. I found a fairly cryptic “Something went wrong, a JSON string wasn’t returned” in the logs and reset your sync. You should be good to go now.

Best,
-Eric
