I have mild neuromas in both of my feet that can flare up from time to time. I’ve successfully been able to eliminate pain completely in my left foot and have gotten the pain in my right to a manageable level. I currently run in newton distance shoes, which i love, but after some heavy running weeks my right foot neuroma can start to flare up a bit. I have orthotics which have helped quite a bit as well. Curious if anyone has been in a similar situation and has found the cushion of the Hoka (sorry, HOKA) shoes has helped or what your experience has been.
Altra shoes has helped my neuroma. They allow the foot to spread out and eliminate pinching on the nerve.
Have not tried HOKA but I’ve gotten relief by running in Brooks PureConnect 2. The individual pods on the sole seem to allow enough flexibility that my neuroma goes away. Interestingly enough I’ve tried PureCadence 2 and did not get the relief and could be related to the different sole design. YMMV
I got neuromas from Newtons to. I loved those things, but then a weird sensation appeared. It appears a lot of people get these from Newtons, you would think they would have addressed that. Well, I guess I got what I needed out of them.
ah i should be clear, i was having neuroma issues before i started with newtons. my bike shoes and cleat position were the biggest aggravator. i suppose i’m wondering if the added cushion might help. thanks!
Some of the stuff I read was that newtons have a traditional profile on the foot and have a snug fit throughout the shoe, including the toe box. The forced forefoot strike causes compression on the nerves that shoes with bigger toe boxes alleviate. I’m sure more has been written on this. Because some people get them, and others do not, I find it hard to believe there is a strictly causal relationship, but certainly a correlation for people with issues that might not have surfaced until running on these. When you look up neuroma and Newtons, there are enough to webpages that pop up on google to certainly support that.

I was in a very similar situation last spring, although I think the neuromas came from a poor seating position at work, running aggravated them. I picked up a pair of Hoka’s last May and rotated them with the Newtons. That combined with changing to a standing desk at work seems to have done the trick. I am still running in Newtons, and will continue to do so, but I am trying other low drop shoes in my rotation.

thanks for the thoughtful reply. working on convincing my workplace to give me a standing desk too
+1 on the Altra/Hoka rotation. That and Sidi “Mega” width shoe on the bike (with met pad).

been managing my neuromas for twenty years… have not had any pain in the Hokas over the last year, seem to work well.
If the toe box of any shoe is putting any compression on the forefoot it will aggravate the neuromas. Either size up, get a wider shoe, or take a box cutter and slash the uppers open to release the pressure.
In addition to finding the best shoes, that allow your feet to spread, try buying some yoga toes, and work on your arch system. Allowing the feet to spread and become soft helps a lot with this kind of thing, and Oh Yes, maybe you would enjoy reading Jack Heggie’s book, Running With The Whole Body, for soft feet. Wishing you luck. It can be fixed.

No problem, happy to help.
I am finding the stand-up desk is making many things happier beyond my feet. My back is much less sore at the end of the day and, now that I am used to it, I seem to recover from my morning workouts better. I suspect this is because I end up moving around much more than I would if I was sitting in my chair. It does take a few weeks to get used to standing for most of the day, but in general it seems to be a healthier way to pass the time in cube land.
edit:
While I have not used the Yoga Toes mentioned elsewhere in this thread, after I run and at the end of the day I stick my fingers between my toes and move my toes around. It think this is the basic idea behind the Yoga Toes, and it feels so so good…

+1 on the Altras. I’ve got neuromas in both feet and Altras have helped a ton.

i thought i was the only one rotating newtons and hokas.
OP: i found the best way to avoid mine is to very gradually ramp up training. by going to doubles instead of longer runs, i have not had a problem in many many months. i also have a standing desk most of the day (about to sit down soon). feet feel better in hokas than newtons but i only have 2 shoes, so there you go.

i made my own with a milk crate and putting the monitor on the cpu on the desk.
