Has anyone installed Nokon cables on their Cervelo?

If so, would you happen to have pics of the “odd” areas (like the bottom bracket cable guide, brake calipers & derailleurs)? I’m trying to get a handle on how the inner sheath running the full length of the inner cable works out in these areas.

Thanks.

Steve

I just did (Soloist Carbon) - not too much fun. Played some nice, soothing music in the garage and had a couple of beers …

FWIW: I could not get the inner liner through the hole in the downtube. You don’t really need to though. For the rear derailleur, it is pretty easy and needs no explanation. I have gotten very good at threading the cables though - here is my trick:

Put the bike in the stand, lift it high. run cable in and just push - it usually will begin to coil near the bottom bracket. lay on the floor and look up at the bottom bracket. use a coat hanger and leave a little hook on the end. stick it up the small exit hole and you will hook one of the coils and pull it right down. Works every time easily.

So, you didn’t run the inner sheath the entire length from shifter to derailleur? I though that was one of the big benefits of the Nokon system - that the inner cable was encased the entire distance.?.

It sounds like you ran yours just like you would a standard cable - only using the housing (inner sheath & beads in the case of the Nokons) from shifter to frame stop up front and from the cable stop on the right chainstay to the barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur in back, with bare inner cable everywhere else. Is that accurate?

What I was interested in seeing was how the inner sheath (and inner cable) were run through the cable guide on the bottom bracket and through the barrel adjusters on the rear derailleur and brake calipers. But, it doesn’t sound like you did any of that.

Steve

I find that if you put a slight kink( 5mm should do ) in the end of the cable ( after you have threaded it through the first section of housing ) it catches easier on the hole at the bottom of the downtube & sometimes just pops right out

R3 - Only break cables. Not gear cables.

almost correct. You can run the inner liner through the barrel adjust on the rear der and longer - same with the brakes. Also, as you come out and up for the front der, etc. just not through the tubes unless you want to enlarge the hole a little (I did not).

Which model Cervelo? I have them on my r2.5.

Well, I’m considering them for my '06 Dual. But, I think most Cervelos use the same basic cable routing. I’m particularly interested in seeing how the inner sheath gets routed through the cable guide on the bottom bracket and how it gets routed through the barrel adjusters on the rear derailleur and brake callipers.

Steve

I thought you might have been asking with regard to internal cable routing, hence my question. I will endeavour to get some photos for you when I am home in daylight next time, but it won’t be until Saturday if you can wait.

Sounds good to me. Thanks!

Steve

Pm me midnight GMT and I will definitely remember
.

I have them on my P3sl, I do not run the liner all the way through though as I’ve found it bumps up the drag a bit had have problems with the rear shifting with a full liner. I run nokons on all my bikes with the same setup. Actually it was my bike shop who suggested I drop the full liner setup and instantly my shifting dillemma was solved.

Hey, Julian. Just wondering if you got the chance to take a few pics.?.

Thanks.

Steve

Sorry Steve I was so busy that I clean forgot (you should have sent that PM)! I will try again as soon as I am home in daylight .

I installed Nokon cables ( Shimano ) on my Hotta which is built up with bar end shifters. I initially set it up with the frame internal cabling unsleeved and the rest sleeved. However, I found that using the supplied “end links” the sleeve worked itself through onto the bar end shifters and started to affect the gear changing. Remedied the situation by using standard cable end caps that have a smaller inner diameter only allowing the cable ( and not sleeve ) to pass through.

Hardest bit is getting the “Nokon” logo’d links in the right place to get seen !!!

No biggie. Just thought I’d ask. Whenever you get a chance…

BTW, I have (another) question for anyone that knows… If I get the Nokon kit for Shimano STI, will the gear cables work with my Dura Ace 10-speed bar-end shifters? I saw a reference that the STI cables use different ends than the bar-end shifters. If this is the case, what’s the solution? Just buy a stainless cable with the correct end and use it with the rest of the Nokon system (inner sheath, housing pieces, etc)?

Also, will the STI kit’s brakes cables work with my Dia Compe 188 levers, or do they have different ends, too?

Thanks.
