I figured this qualifies for the tri forum since oatmeal seems like a staple amongst so many endurance athletes.
I’ve been nuking my morning oatmeal for a while. Plain oatmeal, water, 1:00 in the microwave, add almond butter, eat. A friend of mine recommended I try a pressure cooker. Anyone here have experience with one? Any other prep tips?
You could boil water in a pot instead of using a microwave? But seriously, I like to make blueberry oatmeal pancakes ahead of the week, freeze them, and heat them up in the morning. Pretty simple to make. I blend the oatmeal, honey, 2 eggs, and blueberries together and then let it set for about 10 minutes. Heat up the skillet, pour the batter on, and in a few minutes you’ve got a new way to make oatmeal

one minute? do you have a nuclear microwave? if not…
Any other prep tips?
…cook it longer.
here’s my morning masterpiece:
1 cup oats, 1 3/4 cups water, 1 raw egg. mix it all together and microwave 4 minutes. add chia seeds, maple syrup, coconut milk, banana, walnuts, craisins, and pumpkin seeds. cover and let sit (for the chia seeds to soak and flavors to mix) for 5-10 min. enjoy.
Use only steel-cut oats, not that rolled oats shit.
Put steel-cut oats in pot with 3x as much water, a pinch or less of salt, heat until boil, reduce to simmer, cover, continue to cook 5 minutes while occasionally stirring. Meanwhile, make eggs and bacon. Eat the eggs and bacon. Discard the oats.
As much as I enjoyed Rob’s post to start my day, here’s my method of many years. You would need to tailor the time to the power of your microwave.
Using Old Fashion rolled oats, add one cup of oat and 2 cups of water to a deep 28 oz. Corelle bowel found at Walmart. Using a bowel of this volume and depth allows the oatmeal to boil without out boiling over.
Set the microwave to 70% power and 5 minutes duration. After cooking take the bowel out of the microwave and stir he oatmeal and allow it to set for a few minutes.
Stir in copious fresh or frozen berries, mangos, walnuts, etc… Top with a scoop of tasty 100% whey protein.
If you’re a lover of chocolate, break one half of a Moser Roth 85% dark chocolate bar into 4 pieces and insert them into the oatmeal. Renuke for an additional 2 minutes to just melt the chocolate. The chocolate makes a delicious surprise when you bike into those spoonfuls.
I find old fashion oats a significant upgrade to quick oats in terms of texture and taste. After eating only steel cut oats for a number of years and becoming disappointed with their cost and consistency in terms of taste and texture I returned to old fashioned rolled oats and am now a happy camper.
We have done steel cut oats in a slow cooker over night. Worked very well. Give it a shot, and it will save some time for you in the AM. Great thing is that its very low $ risk. Just follow the directions, as I THINK it lists slow cooker/crock pot as an option.
I am partial to Bobs Red Mill brand for some reason. Steel cut and thick gluten free oats (both of which actually gave me terrible #3, but were delicious… Wife didn’t have this issue tjlugh).
During time crunched work week I’ve been eating old fashioned oatmeal raw with a little granola, sunflower seeds and raisins mixed in. Chase it down with a protein shake, but it isn’t that hard to get down on the fly.

I did exactly that for 5 years before getting tired of the cleanup and need to remember to set up the night before. A single bowel to wash is so easy. Getting up in the morning and realizing I hadn’t set the cooker up the night before was a real bummer.

Bob’s are good quality but give Coach’s Oats found at Costco if you haven’t before. They’re lightly toasted and extremely tasty. They’re the best steel cut oat I’ve ever had.

Thanks. going to try that! Getting board with Oatmeal, raisins, walnuts and protein powder.
Throw in whatever oats your heart desires plus the appropriate amount of water based on the oats used. Add in whatever else you want (I add cinnamon and chopped apples). Close lid, hit the start button and done.
Equal parts rolled oats to any liquid you choose (i.e.1/3c oats to 1/3c of liquid), I use Almond Milk (unsweetened vanilla) because I’m lactose intolerant. Then add anything you like. I add; 1tbsp chia seeds, 1tbsp ground flax, 2tbsp granola, fresh raspberries and blueberries. All in a mason jar (I know so hipster), I’ll make 4 days worth at a time and keep in fridge, as the name says you do let sit at least overnight for the oats to absorb the liquid.
Super easy to make and transport. I find the taste good, mostly because of the add on’s.
Eating uncooked cereal sounds like a great way to get sick.
Muesli is mostly uncooked rolled oats. I eat uncooked rolled oats nearly every day. Rolled oats are very processed and cooked in the processing so not sure how you’d get sick from this more than any other food.
Is there a problem using a microwave? It is the easiest and fastest way to cook oatmeal. Try decreasing the power to 70% and cooking longer. Also try adding some other ingredients. Mix things up a bit. Add some ground flaxseed, chia seeds, real vanilla extract, mashed or pureed fruit of your choice, raspadura to sweeten a bit, ground hemp seeds, cinnamon, condensed milk, etc.

That is an awesome recipe, although I have eliminated some of the extra steps in it. If you actually like steel cut oats, just cook a big batch on Sunday night and you’ll have microwavable Steel Cut Oats all week.
