Has anyone experienced this problem with Newton running shoes?
I run on the outside of my feet. Probably partly as a result of this, the mesh fabric just above the white foam in the forefoot area has torn on both pair of Newton’s I have owned. I have tried the Gravity Neutral Trainers and the Stability Racers and have had the same problem. With the Stability Racers the fabric tore after less than 100 miles (the Gravity Neutral Trainers lasted over 300 miles before tearing). I really love Newtons and I am convinced that they do help me run in a way that has made me less injury prone but I can’t buy a pair every 100 miles. I have NOT had this problem with any other running shoe. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions? I am 51, so changing my running style isn’t gonna happen. Thanks.
There is no picture, but yes, this happened to me as well. I got about 300 miles on them (Sir Isaac trainers) before it happened. I also tend to run on the outside of my foot a bit.
never had a problem. On my second pair after wearing the 1st pair for about 400 miles. It’s most likely your running style. Perhaps you need to switch shoes, or keep buying new ones every 100 miles.
Yes, that is the same place mine wore broke down as well. I believe I got more mileage out of them, but both pairs I have had, ended up with the same ‘slice’ (tear) in the same spot on both shoes. I emailed Newton about this, sent them pictures, and never heard back
I had this problem with the stability trainer a few years ago and had them replaced through Newton foc. They had an orange piece of material in the cut area that has since been changed and I haven’t had a problem since. It didn’t actually make any difference to how the shoe performed. I’d contact Newton for a warranty replacement.

I have had 5 pairs of Newtons, never had a problem with the upper. I am a pretty neutral runner. Can you use that shoe save glue…goop…stuff to protect the area to get more miles out of the shoes?
I was wondering if you ever heard back from this post. I have purchased my son two pairs of Newtons and both pairs have torn out with less than 50 miles. He is a toe runner and our local FleetFeet recommended them. After the first pair tore-out I thought maybe he snagged the mesh on something. Now the second pair has done the same thing so I believe it is an issue with the shoe. I know it’s been some time since your post but I sure would like to he?ar if you ever found a remedy for this.
Thanks
I spoke with a Newton rep at IMFL and she suggested I stay away from the racers since they have nothing reinforcing the mesh where it had been tearing (I had already figured that out on my own). I run in the neutral trainers (Gravity) and the Sir Isaacs and I don’t have the problem because they have a plastic strip that reinforces the mesh (shown below in green).
Yes. Exactly the same thing has happened with my shoes. I’ve put maybe 100 miles on them, at most- and the fabric on both shoes is tearing. I liked the Newtons before I noticed this happening- but I can’t afford a new pair of shoes every 100 miles.
I’ve been running on Newtons for a couple years now with no problems that you are describing. I would imagine it has more to do with your gait (as others have pointed out) than the actual shoe itself.
However, it does seem that they use a very light weight mesh so maybe if your foot was slightly wider it could rip easier. Also if your shoe isn’t tied tight enough at the bottom lace it would allow the front part of your foot to ‘float’ more side o side when running, especially as you run there will be sweat acting as a lubricant.
I have four pairs of Newton running shoes. Two trainers, and two racers. I have never had this problem; but at a race expo last September, I spoke to the Newton rep and he suggested taking out the insole. For me, the toe box is a little snug and the rep indicated that many people at Newton take the insole out. I tried it and love the “feel” of the shoes. I don’t know if this will help or not but it is worth a try. I have not had any issues with impact, strike, etc.
Just replying to the original post. I don’t work for Newton, but I am sponsored on them. I have a few pairs each with over 1000K on them. I actually have one pair with ~2000K that does not want to die (both upper and sole).
I agree the mesh upper is somewhat “lightweight” but my understanding is that it is this way so that your forefoot can splay naturally as if bare foot and work towards absorbing road shock actively (just like when you run barefoot from the swim to your bike at T1). So on the one hand the mesh as to be “soft and lightweight” to facilitate that natural forefoot splay, on the other hand it has to not tear either. I’ll try to get someone who actually works there to try to respond to this thread to explain as I can’t respond on any of this…I’ve run in the Gravitas, Distancia, All Weather and the old Trail/All weather version (black) without this issue, but I am fairly neutral and weigh anywhere between 136 and 145 depending on time of year, so the upper is not really getting that much stress compared to a larger runner who might supinate (sp?).
