Has anyone else experienced knee pain only when stretching hamstrings?

It’s never happened to me before? My knee doesn’t hurt when running or cycling but when I stretch my hamstrings it hurts like heck and it’s been that way for a couple of weeks now. Any idea what could be going on? Should I keep stretching or back off? Advil seems to help so could I have some tendinitis or something? Any ideas? Thanks!

Well, if it hurts only when you stretch, maybe you shouldn’t stretch. It is like saying your eye feels fine until you stick your finger in it.

How are you stretcing it? Are you standing up and bending over? Sitting on the floor and reaching?

If you are worried about tighness try using a foam roller and see of that works better. Otherwise leave it alone for a while them sloooowly go back into stretching. If that doesn’t work, see your doc.

Thanks. I was just wondering if tight hamstrings commonly caused knee pain or if the knee pain is caused by some other knee specific problem due to running. I searched around but didn’t find much. I wasn’t sure if I should also cut back on mileage if that is the root cause as I’m running about 30-40 mpw.

I do have a foam roller and will work my legs with that a bit as well. Good point on the eye too.

My PT has told me that hamstrings can affect the alignment of the knee. I have a problem with my right kneecap tracking incorrectly and do exercises to increase stability/balance and one of them is for building up strength in my hamstrings. It comes down to making sure you have equal strength across the muscles that surround your knee so that one isn’t pulling stronger and knocking things out of whack. This is my own interpretation of the long explaination he gave me. I specifically work on the muscles that are weaker on me. The different between my right leg and left leg for strength, balance and running gate is pretty dramatic. It is getting better with regular exercises. I use the foam roller on my IT band and wow, it hurts, and that is one side of my leg that throws the alignment out of wack.

Cutting back on milage won’t hurt. If you are in pain that is always a good way to help heal.

What were some of the exercises that worked to put muscles back in balance? I’m experiencing similar issue now
THANKS

I’ll dig some up and post them.
