Harvard students have admissions rescinded

I have never heard of such a thing until now:
This week saw a remarkable collision of free speech, toxic Internet culture and more, unfolding at one of the world’s most prestigious universities.

At least 10 admitted Harvard students in the Class of 2021 had their admissions offers rescinded after a group exchange of racist and sexually offensive Facebook messages, the Harvard Crimson student newspaper reported this week.

They can recover from this… hopefully better on the other side

Doesn’t matter. The lawsuits will begin trickling in shortly.

What is it about the “private” setting on Facebook that is such a difficult concept for some people.

OMG I won’t get as many likes or thumbs up or comments or whatever is driving me to post everything I think, say and do!

Apparently they were posting in a private room, but someone with access brought it to the schools attention.

There is no free speech issue here. Furthermore, Don’t care.

HS kids, even those that turn out just fine, say stupid things. They’re kids. Saying stupid offensive things, at that age, is for most of them, just being cool. If I took heat for all the asinine things I said as a youngster, it’d be my ass. But I was a dumbass kid. Sheeze.

Kind of reminds me of the Marine Corps private chat room issue.

Both the Marine Corps and Harvard can choose who gets the honor…

Me too, you’re largely a product of the family and friends you grew up with. The unfortunate cases are the people who never move beyond that upbringing.

Really? For what?

I thought it was common knowledge that colleges can rescind your acceptance between the time you get your letter and the time you attend. You start failing classes, become a jackass, etc, and off with your acceptance. I’m pretty sure that they tell you that in your letter.

Yes, that was my thought too. Most folks in the military are children, just barely out of HS. But every time some military youngster does something stupid, folks get their panties in a wad. The Marines are one of the last bastions of a culture with really high expectations for honorable behavior. But shit happens. Kids do dumb things. It’s a mistake to get too worked up about it. Whack them up side the head and move on.

You can sue a ham sandwich; it doesn’t mean you’ll win. And the snowflakes in this example will NOT win, should they choose to sue.

On a related note, I am thankful that camera phones weren’t invented yet when I was in college

I had mixed feelings when I saw this a few days ago. On the one hand stupid kids doing stupid things. On the other hand I would assume at this point they would have turned down other offers and maybe now have few options? What does this say about Harvard their rigorous application process doesn’t seem so great. Are they falling over backwards to produce diversity in their entering class? My daughter could likely get into an Ivy League school based on marks and sports but we are opting to stay in Canada.

+1,000,000

Yet we had boundaries that required the application of intelligence and common sense. These kids have grown up in the social media word and I have to ask: weren’t these kids just stupid? This wasn’t just their own random Facebook posting, but in a group derived from an official Facebook account set up by Harvard. From the article:

According to our reporting and The Crimson, members of Harvard’s incoming class are invited to join an official Facebook group, which is moderated. From there, some students form their own group chats around interests or similarities, such as studying political science or being from New Jersey.

The students in question, admitted in early December, formed a group chat known variously as “General F**kups” and “Harvard memes for horny bourgeois teens.” At one time, it had as many as 100 members. They sent one another images with captions that were racist and anti-Semitic and that made light of pedophilia, among other offensive themes.

The article provides no specific information about what the fools posted, but if it was along the lines indicated, I think they were too stupid for Harvard. Or are General F***ups a protected class these days?

What does this say about Harvard their rigorous application process doesn’t seem so great.

What are you thinking here? They should have teams of forensic social media sleuths doing background checks on all admitted students?

Not only this, but I’d bet every school in the country kicks at least one kid out during the school year for behavior incidents.

I’m thinking Harvard’s application process isn’t all it is cracked up to be. In other words despite all their best efforts they really don’t know that much about the students they are admitting aside from that they are good at jumping through the hoops that are their admission process. They do know they have good marks and are good at doing the SAT. Beyond that they don’t know much about the character of the people they are admitting.
